What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Butterfly Effect Shawl is a woven textile measuring 22" x 70" in finished dimensions. This shawl is designed to evoke the visual characteristics of a Swallowtail Butterfly, featuring undulating black markings on buttery yellow wings. The finished piece combines aesthetic inspiration from nature with functional wearable design, creating a sophisticated accessory suitable for layering.

Weave Structure and Techniques

Shadow weave is the primary weaving technique used in this project. Shadow weave creates the illusion of curves and movement across the fabric surface while maintaining a stable, structured construction. This technique is particularly effective for the Butterfly Effect Shawl because it allows the designer to imitate the curving lines visible on butterfly wings without compromising the fabric's integrity. The shadow weave structure produces visual depth and dimensionality through the strategic interplay of light and dark yarns.

Additional finishing techniques include whipped hemstitch (also known as overcasting) applied to the shawl edges. Special consideration is given to the fringe allowance during wet finishing, with plain weave sections woven at the beginning and end of the fringe to prevent excessive shrinkage and maintain straight, cuttable fringe.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Valley Yarns Butterfly Effect Shawl is constructed entirely from Valley Yarns Rayon Chenille, a 100% rayon yarn with a yardage of 1,450 yards per pound, sold on 1 lb cones.

Warp Yarn Requirements:

• Midnight: 616 yards
• Gold: 613 yards
• Total warp length: 3.5 yards of 351 ends (includes floating selvedges)

Weft Yarn Requirements:

• Midnight: 417 yards
• Gold: 419 yards

The chenille yarn selection is intentional and meaningful to the design concept. The velvety texture of rayon chenille mimics the appearance of butterfly wings when viewed under a microscope, adding tactile and visual authenticity to the finished shawl.

Weaving Specifications

The shawl is woven at a sett of 14 ends per inch (epi), achieved using a 1-2-2-2 threading pattern in an 8-dent reed. The width in reed measures 25", with a warp length of 3.5 yards comprising 351 ends.

Special attention is required when working with chenille yarn during finishing. The unwoven fringe allowance tends to shrink and become unruly during wet finishing. To accommodate this characteristic, 6" of space is left before beginning to weave, providing sufficient length for the chenille to shrink during wet finishing while still allowing the fringe to be cut to a shorter, finished length. Plain weave sections at the beginning and end of the fringe prevent excessive shriveling and maintain straight edges suitable for hemstitching and fringe finishing.

Design Inspiration and Concept

Designed by Tegan Frisino, the Butterfly Effect Shawl draws inspiration from the Swallowtail Butterfly and its distinctive wing patterns. The designer selected shadow weave specifically to capture the undulating black markings characteristic of butterfly wings while creating visual movement and depth. The color palette of midnight and gold reflects the natural contrast found in butterfly wing coloration, and the chenille yarn's luxurious texture enhances the organic, natural aesthetic of the finished piece.
