Valley Yarns Thetis Pullover
Project Overview
The Thetis Pullover is an advanced beginner knitting pattern designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This seamless, top-down pullover sweater combines multiple knitting techniques to create a sophisticated garment with both lace and cable elements. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and offers three finished sizes to accommodate different measurements.
Construction Method and Techniques
The Thetis Pullover employs a seamless, top-down construction worked primarily in the round using circular needles. The sweater is strategically worked flat for certain sections and in the round for others, allowing for efficient shaping and minimal finishing work. This hybrid approach combines the benefits of both techniques to create a well-fitted garment.
Key construction features include:
- Top-down seamless construction that minimizes seaming and allows for try-on fitting during the knitting process
- Sleeve cap shaping with strategic increases and decreases worked every seventh round to create proper armhole depth and sleeve cap fit
- Waist shaping through paired decreases before and after markers, followed by paired increases, creating a flattering silhouette
- Garter stitch neck bands at the front pieces that are overlapped and picked up through both layers for a neat, finished neckline
- Partial sleeve seaming from the cuffs up to marked points, with the upper sleeve portions remaining unsewn due to the seamless construction
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
The sweater features two primary stitch patterns that showcase different knitting techniques:
Lace Pattern: A repeating six-row lace motif forms the primary decorative element. This pattern uses fundamental lace stitches including:
- Yarn overs (yo) to create openwork and decorative eyelet details
- Knit two together (k2tog) decreases that slant to the right
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases that slant to the left, paired with yarn overs for balanced lace shaping
- Alternating knit and purl stitches to frame the lace motif with textural contrast
The lace pattern is worked over a 12-stitch repeat and creates an elegant, openwork fabric. The pattern rows alternate between wrong-side purl rows and right-side pattern rows, allowing the lace motif to develop clearly.
Stockinette Stitch (St st): The majority of the sweater body is worked in stockinette stitch—knitting every round when working in the round, or alternating knit and purl rows when working flat. This creates a smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as a neutral canvas for the lace pattern elements.
Garter Stitch: Garter stitch bands appear at the neck edges, created by alternating purl and knit rounds. This reversible, textured stitch provides structure and prevents curling at the neckline.
Finished Sizes and Measurements
The pattern provides three finished size options:
- Size 1: 36" back width, 85 stitches across back and front
- Size 2: 42" back width, 100 stitches across back and front
- Size 3: 48" back width, 115 stitches across back and front
Lower body length ranges from 15" to 19" depending on size, with options to adjust for desired length. Sleeve cuff circumferences range from 9" to 13" depending on size.
Materials and Gauge
The Thetis Pullover is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Colrain, a blend of 50% Merino wool and 50% Tencel. This fiber combination provides breathability, drape, and a subtle sheen. The yardage requirement is 9 to 13 skeins of 50-gram balls (approximately 109 yards per skein), depending on the finished size selected.
Needles: US size 7 circular needles are recommended, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Circular needles allow for working both in the round and flat as the pattern requires.
Gauge: Accurate gauge is essential for
