Product Description

Over many years of developing weaving drafts for Webs, this weaver has been asked many times for instructions for weaving a tallit for a grandchild, a family member, or maybe a friend. The time has come. And no, the weaver does not have to be Jewish although the recipient probably is. This tallit is woven with Valley Yarns 10/2 Cotton, 8/2 Tencel, 5/2 Bamboo, and 20/2 Silk on four shafts. The twill treadled as overshot looks much more complex than it actually is to make the draft accessible for weavers of all levels.

Weave Structure: Four-shaft twill treadled as overshot

Required Equipment:
- Four-shaft loom with minimum 30” weaving width; two or three boat shuttles with three bobbins;-
- a set of tzitzit - the ritual strings attached to the corners of the tallit;
- fine point disappearing ink pen (Dritz or any other brand);
- large eye, blunt tip tapestry needle and slim, blunt tip tapestry needle.
Optional but recommended:
- Four-shaft narrow loom for the neck band and corner patches;

Valley Yarns Weaving a Tallit

What Is Being Made

This weaving draft provides instructions for creating a tallit, a traditional fringed shawl. The project is designed by Barbara Elkins and accommodates weavers of all skill levels by utilizing a four-shaft loom, making the complex appearance more accessible than it initially seems. The tallit features symmetrical pattern stripes at each end and involves two separate warps: one for the main body of the shawl and a narrower warp dedicated to the neck band and corner patches.

Weaving Techniques

This project employs stripe patterning as its primary decorative technique. The draft is developed specifically for four-shaft looms, which allows intermediate and advanced weavers to create intricate visual effects while remaining accessible to beginners. The weaving process itself is described as enjoyable, though the threading preparation requires close attention to detail due to its complexity. Weavers will prepare the warp, weave off the body of the tallit, and finish the warp ends with a twisted fringe, with alternative finishing methods also provided in the pattern tips.

Materials and Tools

This weaving project requires yarn suitable for tallit construction and a four-shaft loom. The specific yarn weight and fiber content recommendations are detailed within the complete draft instructions. Weavers will need standard weaving equipment appropriate for their loom setup.

Pattern Features

  • Symmetrical stripe patterns positioned at each end
  • Two-warp construction system for distinct design elements
  • Four-shaft loom compatibility
  • Finished with twisted fringe detailing
