Valley Yarns Silk Medallions Scarf

What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Silk Medallions Scarf is a woven silk accessory designed by Sue Anne Sullivan. This elegant scarf features an eye-catching medallion pattern and is suitable for weavers of all experience levels. The finished scarf measures 9.5" x 82" with 9" fringe at each end, creating a light and sophisticated accessory perfect for everyday wear or special occasions.

Weaving Techniques

This project uses twill weave structure as its primary technique. The design was developed by experimenting with a twill draft from A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns by Carol Strickler. The designer extended and inverted portions of the threading while changing the treadling sequence to create the distinctive medallion pattern. The scarf also incorporates floating selvedges on each side of the warp for a finished edge, which are sleyed in their own dent and weighted off the back beam. Plain weave is used initially as a scrap yarn section to close the spaces in the warp after tying on.

Stitches and Weaving Structure

  • Twill weave: The primary weave structure creating the medallion design through systematic thread interlacing
  • Plain weave: Used for the initial scrap yarn section to stabilize the warp
  • Floating selvedges: Decorative edge threads that create a finished selvage without distortion

Materials and Equipment

Yarn: Valley Yarns 20/2 Silk, a delicate yet sturdy thread made from 100% spun mulberry silk. The warp uses #657 Coffee (1276 yards) and the weft uses #671 Salmon (984 yards). This yarn is sold on 8.8 oz cones with a yardage of 4900 yards per pound, making it suitable for both warp and weft applications.

Equipment: An 8-shaft loom at least 11" wide is required for this project. Additional equipment includes a 15-dent reed, 1 shuttle, and 1 bobbin for weft winding. The warp is set at 30 ends per inch (epi) using a 2/dent configuration in the reed, with a finished weaving width of 10.6" in the reed.
