Product Description

Technically this hat could be called the Silver or Gold Lining Hat, since it's completely reversible. This hat is actually made in a capsule shape, then one end is inverted to make a warm and versatile double-layered hat with no tight bound off or cast on edges at the brim.

This pattern is available as a PDF download.

Valley Yarns Silver Lining Hat

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Silver Lining Hat is a seamless, worked-in-the-round knit hat designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat measuring 20 inches around and 12 inches long, featuring a striking two-tone colorway created by working the crown and main body in one color and the upper section in a contrasting shade. The design showcases an elegant construction technique that begins with a small cast-on and expands through strategic increases, then contracts through decreases to form a fitted crown.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs seamless, in-the-round construction, a hallmark of modern knit hat design that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, tubular fabric. The hat begins with top-down construction, starting from the crown with a small number of stitches and expanding outward through strategic increases. Stitch markers are used throughout to track increase and decrease points, ensuring even shaping. The pattern incorporates color changes to transition from the Slate yarn to the Tapestry yarn, creating a distinct visual division in the finished hat. The decreasing section mirrors the increasing section, demonstrating symmetrical shaping principles essential to hat construction.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the hat, created by knitting every round, which produces the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of this pattern
  • Knit front and back (kfb): An increase stitch used during the expansion rounds to add stitches at regular intervals, creating the hat's crown shaping
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease stitch used in the final section to systematically reduce stitches and form the fitted top of the hat

Materials and Tools

The Valley Yarns Silver Lining Hat is worked in Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk Hand Dyed, a luxurious blend of 80% alpaca and 20% silk that provides both warmth and drape. One skein each of two colorways—Slate and Tapestry—are required, with each skein providing 865 yards of yardage at a 4-ounce weight. Needles include US size 2 (2.75 mm) 16-inch circular needles and double-pointed needles, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge of approximately 7 stitches per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Eight stitch markers are essential for tracking the eight evenly spaced increase and decrease points throughout the pattern.

I am not in love with this pattern. The pattern itself is super simple, however the instructions to begin the hat are almost non-existent unless you already know how. I think if you already knew how, you wouldn't need to purchase this pattern. However because I did pay for it, I was determined to teach myself and after hours on youtube I regret that I paid for this pattern that I will not use. I still wanted to make this style hat so I found another designer and paid for the "Musselburgh Hat"...
