The Manta Top-Down Tee is a seamless, top-down knit sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This garment is constructed beginning at the neckline and worked downward in the round to create a finished pullover tee with set-in sleeves. The design offers five finished size options ranging from 32 inches to 48 inches in circumference, making it suitable for multiple fit preferences.
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that define its intermediate difficulty level. The garment is worked seamlessly in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the piece as they work and easily adjust length to personal preference. The pattern incorporates short-row shaping (indicated by wrap-and-turn abbreviations, W&T) to create structured shoulder definition on the front piece. Additionally, strategic increases are worked at marked intervals to shape the sleeve caps and neckline, creating a fitted silhouette with proper sleeve cap ease.
The Manta Top-Down Tee is primarily constructed in stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric that provides a smooth, refined appearance suitable for a versatile everyday garment. Stockinette stitch is created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. The pattern also employs make-one increases (abbreviated as m1) for shaping, which creates nearly invisible new stitches by lifting the horizontal strand between stitches and working it through the back loop. Short-row shaping using wrap-and-turn techniques adds three-dimensional structure to the shoulders and neckline without creating visible holes or gaps.
The recommended yarn is Valley Yarns Longmeadow, a practical blend of 60% cotton and 40% microfiber that provides durability and breathability ideal for a tee. Each skein yields 117 yards and weighs 50 grams; the pattern requires 6, 6, 7, 8, or 9 skeins depending on the finished size selected. The sample shown is worked in color 20 black. Knitters should use US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in both 32-inch and 12-inch lengths, or double-pointed needles, adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows equaling 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured over a blocked swatch. Additional supplies include four stitch markers to denote pattern sections and scrap yarn or spare circular needles size 7 or smaller to hold stitches temporarily during construction.
