Pinus Strobus, commonly known as the Eastern White Pine, grows throughout New England. The cable pattern on this soft and cozy Strobus Hat looks just like the long, tasseled needles of this storied tree. The hat is knit in warm Valley Yarns Berkshire from the brim up with crown decreases cleverly worked into the stitch pattern. Note: Stitch pattern is both charted and written out.

The Strobus Hat is a seamless, knitted beanie designed by Kirsten Hipsky that features an intricate cable pattern inspired by the long, tasseled needles of the eastern white pine tree (Pinus strobus), a species commonly grown throughout New England. This soft and cozy hat is worked from the brim up and finished with crown decreases that are cleverly integrated into the stitch pattern itself. The finished hat measures approximately 20 inches around, making it a standard adult size.
This hat employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that place it at the advanced beginner difficulty level:
The Strobus Hat employs a focused set of fundamental and specialty stitches:
The Strobus Hat is designed to be made from Valley Yarns Berkshire, a wool-alpaca blend yarn. One skein is required, which contains 100 grams and 108 yards of yarn. The recommended color is color 35 forest, a deep green shade that evokes the natural appearance of evergreen pine trees. The yarn composition of 85% wool and 15% alpaca provides warmth, softness, and a slight sheen while maintaining excellent stitch definition for cable work.
The pattern calls for US size 7 (4.5mm) needles in two configurations: a 16-inch circular needle for the main body and double-pointed needles for the final crown decreases when the stitch count becomes too small for the circular needle. A stitch marker is used to denote the beginning of each round and, optionally, to mark the start of each 16-stitch pattern repeat to aid in pattern tracking.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches equals 4 inches in the stitch pattern when measured unstretched. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished circumference of 20 inches and ensuring that the cable pattern displays at the intended scale. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project and adjust needle size if necessary to match the specified gauge.
