Valley Yarns Campfire Pullover
What is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Campfire Pullover is a seamless, bottom-up knitted sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This pullover features warm, vibrant colorwork and is constructed as a cold weather favorite with raglan sleeves and a front-back reversible neckline. The garment is available in six finished sizes ranging from 32 inches to 52.5 inches in circumference, making it suitable for various body measurements.
Construction Techniques
This intermediate-level sweater employs several key knitting techniques to create a polished, professional finish:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is worked from the lower body upward, beginning with the ribbed hem and colorwork body before progressing to the sleeves and yoke.
- Seamless, Worked in the Round: The entire garment is knitted in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
- Stranded Colorwork: The Sparks pattern employs stranded colorwork techniques, where two colors are carried across the round to create the geometric design. This method requires careful tension management to prevent puckering or loose floats.
- Raglan Sleeve Shaping: Raglan decreases are worked into the yoke pattern, creating diagonal lines from the underarm to the neckline for a classic, flattering fit.
Stitches Used
The Campfire Pullover incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined into structured stitch patterns:
- Knit Stitch (k): The primary stitch used throughout the colorwork and body sections.
- Purl Stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the k1, p1 ribbing at the hem and cuffs, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape.
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used in the raglan shaping to reduce stitches and create the diagonal sleeve cap lines.
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease also used in raglan decreases to create balanced shaping on both sides of the raglan lines.
- Sparks Colorwork Pattern: A repeating eight-round pattern worked over a multiple of four stitches. The pattern alternates between rounds of solid color knitting in Color A and rounds featuring single stitches of Color B spaced at regular intervals, creating a scattered spark-like effect across the fabric.
Materials
The Campfire Pullover is designed to be knitted with specific materials that contribute to its warm, durable construction:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky, a blend of 85% wool and 15% alpaca. This yarn provides warmth, elasticity, and a soft feel against the skin. The bulky weight allows the sweater to knit up quickly while creating a substantial, insulating fabric. Yardage requirements are 5 to 10 skeins of Copper (Color A) depending on size, and 2 to 3 skeins of Pumpkin (Color B) for the colorwork accents. Each skein contains 100 yards and weighs 100 grams.
- Needles: US size 10.5 (6.50mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles are required to achieve the specified gauge. Circular needles are used for the body and yoke, while double-pointed needles are employed for the sleeves as they decrease in circumference.
- Notions: Eight stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats and raglan decrease points, and stitch holders are necessary to temporarily hold stitches during construction, particularly at the underarms before joining the yoke.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches when worked in the Sparks colorwork pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the sweater to fit as designed. The pattern provides detailed instructions for six size options, allowing knitters to customize the finished circumference to their preferences.
