Valley Yarns Marjoram Hat & Mitts

Project Overview

The Marjoram Hat and Mitts is a coordinated two-piece set designed by Sara Delaney that showcases classic granny square construction. This intermediate-level crochet project features a matching hat and fingerless mitts worked primarily in the round using simple granny square motifs as the foundation for both garments. The set is designed to provide warmth during cool fall months while maintaining a timeless, traditional aesthetic.

What Is Being Made

  • Granny Band Hat: A one-size-fits-most hat measuring 21 inches around and 8 inches deep, constructed from seven granny squares sewn together edge-to-edge to form a cylinder, with an additional brim section
  • Fingerless Mitts: A pair of one-size-fits-most mitts measuring 8 inches around and 5 inches long, each made from two granny squares joined to create a cylinder with ribbed edges at the finger and wrist openings

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garments are worked in the round, beginning with foundation rings and progressing through multiple rounds of increases. The construction method is seamless in the round for the ribbed edging sections, while the granny squares themselves are constructed individually and then sewn together to form the main body of each piece. The pattern incorporates stripes through the strategic use of two coordinating yarn colors—Ocean Heather as the main color and Lake Heather as the contrasting color—which are introduced at different rounds of the granny squares to create visual interest.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Marjoram pattern utilizes a focused selection of essential crochet stitches. The granny squares are built using double crochet (dc) stitches arranged in the traditional granny square formation with chain spaces between stitch clusters. The ribbed edging sections of the fingerless mitts feature front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches, which create a textured ribbed effect by working around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops. Single crochet (sc) stitches are used to finish the finger and wrist edges of the mitts, providing a neat, finished appearance. Slip stitches (sl st) are used throughout to join rounds and complete the circular construction.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

The Marjoram Hat and Mitts pattern calls for Valley Yarns Northampton, a 100% wool yarn with 247 yards per 100-gram skein. Crafters will need one skein each of two colorways: 40 Ocean Heather (main color) and 42 Lake Heather (contrasting color). The recommended hook size is an F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook, though the pattern notes that hook size may be adjusted as needed to obtain the specified gauge. The finished granny squares should measure 4 inches across when gently blocked, which serves as the gauge reference for this project.

Construction Method

Both the hat and mitts follow a modular construction approach centered on granny squares. For the fingerless mitts, two granny squares are made through Round 4, then laid wrong sides together and sewn along two opposite edges to form a cylinder. The finger edge and wrist edge are then finished by joining yarn and working single crochet stitches around the opening, followed by two rounds of double crochet ribbing using front post and back post techniques. For the granny hat, seven granny squares are made through Round 3 only and sewn together edge-to-edge to form a cylinder band measuring 21 inches around. A brim section is then added to complete the hat structure. This modular approach allows crafters to work on manageable pieces before assembling them into the finished garments.

Yarns at Webs are of excellent quality, no comparison to what you get at Big Box stores. The staff is very knowledgeable and very accommodating. If they aren't sure of something like when a sale starts or the sale price, they will take the time to look it up for you. They also are very helpful with answering people's individual questions. It was worth the extra time I took to drive to Northampton just to go to Webs.
