Product Description
The Valley Yarns Maria Baby Blanket features the same lovely lace counterpane squares as the Mitchella Blanket and uses the super soft and machine-washable Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK, making it perfect for a baby blanket. Counterpane squares are knit individually and seamed together with a double crochet edging added for a finishing touch and to help the blanket to lay flat.
Both blankets are named for Maria Mitchell, born in Nantucket in 1818, who discovered a telescopic comet and was the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer. Mitchella repens, a native North American plant, bears flowers that look remarkably similar to the flower motif in the counterpane.

Valley Yarns Maria Baby Blanket
Project Overview
The Valley Yarns Maria Baby Blanket is a knitted baby blanket designed by Kirsten Hipsky, featuring a sophisticated lace counterpane pattern worked in a soft, washable yarn. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished blanket measuring 24" x 32", 32" x 32", or 32" x 40" depending on the size option chosen. The blanket is constructed from multiple individual lace squares that are seamed together and finished with a simple crocheted border, making it an ideal heirloom-quality gift for a newborn or young child.
Construction Technique
The Maria Baby Blanket employs a modular construction method, with each counterpane square measuring 8" when blocked. Squares are knitted individually in the round using double pointed needles, then blocked separately before being seamed together at the end. This approach allows for easier handling and blocking of individual components compared to working the entire blanket as one piece. Alternatively, squares can be joined as you go using a three-needle bind off technique if preferred. A simple double crocheted edging is added after the squares are assembled, helping the finished blanket lay flat and providing a neat, professional border.
Knitting Stitches and Lace Techniques
The counterpane squares showcase elegant lace stitch work featuring yarn overs and decreases that create an openwork floral motif. Key stitches used throughout the pattern include knit, yarn over (yo), knit two together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk), and slip-one-knit-two-together-pass-slipped-stitch-over (sl1-k2tog-psso) decreases. The pattern is worked in the round, with every even-numbered round after Round 2 increasing 8 stitches total—2 stitches on each of the four needles. This systematic increase creates the expanding square shape, with the stitch count on each needle calculated by adding 1 to the round number. For example, after Round 24 is complete, each needle should contain 25 stitches. The lace pattern is worked in stockinette stitch between the decorative yarn-over and decrease sequences, creating a balanced, symmetrical design.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
The Maria Baby Blanket is worked in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK weight yarn in color 25 Light Grey. The pattern requires 6 skeins for the smallest size, 7 skeins for the medium size, and 8 skeins for the largest size. This DK weight yarn is specifically chosen for its softness and machine-washable properties, making it practical for a baby blanket that will require frequent laundering. Knitting needles required include US size 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles for working the squares in the round, with the option to switch to circular needles once stitches become too crowded on the double pointed needles. A US size F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook is needed for working the finishing border. The pattern calls for approximately 4 stitch markers, which are optional but helpful for separating each repeat and tracking pattern progression.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked at a gauge of approximately 5.5 stitches per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Each counterpane square measures 33 stitches on each side and blocks to an 8-inch square. The finished blanket dimensions vary by size: the smallest option measures 24" x 32", the medium size is 32" x 32", and the largest measures 32" x 40". These generous dimensions make the blanket suitable for use in a crib, stroller, or as a decorative throw.
Design Inspiration
The Maria Baby Blanket shares its lace counterpane square design with the Mitchella Baby Blanket but is worked in the thinner Valley Superwash DK yarn rather than a heavier weight, creating a more delicate and refined finished fabric ideal for a baby blanket. Both blankets are named in honor of Maria Mitchell, born in Nantucket in 1818, who discovered a telescopic comet and became the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer. The floral motif in the counterpane pattern is inspired by Mitchella repens, a native North American plant whose flowers bear a remarkable resemblance to the lace design.
