Valley Yarns Nordic Tiles Scarf & Fingerless Mitts
Project Overview
The Valley Yarns Nordic Tiles Scarf & Fingerless Mitts set is an intermediate-level crochet project inspired by traditional Nordic folk art. This two-piece collection features a rectangular scarf and a pair of fingerless mitts worked in striking red and natural colorways. The design combines seamless construction techniques with a distinctive tile motif pattern, making it an ideal mid-season accessory set to transition between seasons.
What Is Being Made
This pattern includes two complementary garments:
- Scarf: A finished size of 7 inches wide by 60 inches long, not including fringe. The scarf features the Nordic Tiles pattern assembled using simple surface crochet techniques.
- Fingerless Mitts: A pair of mitts measuring 8 inches long by 7 inches around in one size that fits most. The mitts are constructed using the same tile motif design as the scarf.
Techniques Used
This project employs several intermediate crochet techniques that work together to create the Nordic Tiles aesthetic:
- Seamless Construction: Both the scarf and mitts are worked seamlessly, with the mitts specifically constructed in the round using a continuous circular method. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a polished, professional finish.
- Stripes: The design incorporates color work through striping, alternating between the natural and red colorways to build the tile pattern across the fabric.
- Worked in the Round: The fingerless mitts are constructed entirely in the round, beginning with a foundation chain joined into a circle and worked continuously upward to the desired length.
- Surface Crochet Assembly: The scarf tiles are assembled using simple surface crochet, a technique where stitches are worked on the surface of completed fabric pieces to join them together rather than seaming them.
- Tile Motif Construction: The pattern features repeating tile motifs that measure 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches, created through a series of coordinated rounds that build dimensional texture and pattern.
Stitches Used
The Valley Yarns Nordic Tiles pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches executed in a structured sequence:
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation and spacing within rounds
- Double Crochet (dc): The primary stitch used to build the tile motif, worked in groups to create the dimensional pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): Used to create transition stitches between pattern sections and to add definition to the tile design
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and to work the surface crochet assembly technique
Materials
The pattern is designed to be worked with specific yarn and hook specifications to achieve the correct gauge and finished dimensions:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Northfield, a premium blend of 70% merino wool, 20% baby alpaca, and 10% silk. This luxurious fiber content provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen. The yarn yields 124 yards per 50-gram skein. The pattern requires 4 skeins of color 01 Natural for the main color and 2 skeins of color 19 Red for the contrast color.
- Hook: US size G/6 (4.00mm) or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge
- Gauge: One tile motif measures 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the scarf and mitts to reach their intended finished dimensions.
Design Inspiration & Finished Details
Designed by Sara Delaney, the Nordic Tiles pattern draws inspiration from the striking reds and whites characteristic of traditional Nordic folk art. The combination of the natural and red colorways creates a visually compelling contrast that echoes classic Scandinavian textile design. The scarf features fringe at the ends, adding movement and a traditional finishing touch. This set is described as a great travel project due to its straightforward construction and the modular nature of the tile assembly, making it suitable for crafters who want to work on a portable project that doesn't require constant attention to complex stitch sequences.
