Product Description
The Valley Yarns Plesti Fair Isle Pullover and Hat set knit in Valley Yarns Northampton features a traditional combination of fair isle pattern and color but encourages you to explore and play! Worked from the bottom up in rounds with seamless raglan shaping, this slightly oversized sweater lets you get all of the colorwork out of the way before any shaping happens, and the hat features decreases that mimic the raglan shaping on the sweater and a pom-pom! Stick with a more traditional palette for a sweater that’s great at the office or an afternoon at the ski lodge, and go wild with color for the hat.

Valley Yarns Plesti Fair Isle Pullover and Hat
Project Overview
The Plesti Pullover and Hat is a coordinated two-piece knitting set designed by Sara Delaney that combines a classic fair isle sweater with a matching hat. This intermediate-level project encourages creative color exploration while maintaining traditional colorwork techniques. The set is ideal for creating a cohesive winter wardrobe piece or experimenting with bold color combinations.
Sweater Construction
Garment Type: The pullover is a seamless, bottom-up sweater with raglan shaping, available in six sizes to fit chest measurements from 32" to 52" with finished measurements ranging from 34" to 54" around the chest. The slightly oversized fit provides comfortable layering and movement.
Construction Method: Worked in the round using seamless raglan shaping, this design allows knitters to complete all colorwork patterning before beginning any decreases. This strategic approach simplifies the knitting process by keeping the fair isle pattern consistent throughout the body before transitioning to shaping at the yoke.
Techniques Used: The sweater employs stranded colorwork (fair isle) techniques, worked seamlessly in the round. The bottom-up construction begins with the body and progresses upward, incorporating raglan decreases that taper the garment at the shoulders. The pattern uses a two-color long-tail cast-on method to create a decorative ridge at the hem.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns: The sweater features corrugated ribbing at the hem, which combines knit and purl stitches in alternating colors to create a textured, elastic edge. The main body showcases a fair isle colorwork chart worked in stockinette stitch. Raglan shaping is achieved through paired decreases (ssk and k2tog) placed symmetrically around the garment.
Hat Construction
Garment Type: The coordinating hat measures 20" around and 10" tall, designed to complement the pullover with matching colorwork and complementary shaping.
Construction Method: The hat is worked seamlessly in the round from the cast-on edge upward. It features decreases that mirror the raglan shaping found on the sweater, creating visual continuity between the two pieces. The hat is finished with a pom-pom for added texture and visual interest.
Techniques Used: Like the sweater, the hat employs stranded colorwork techniques worked in the round. The decreases are strategically placed to echo the raglan decreases of the pullover, creating a cohesive design narrative between the two garments.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns: The hat begins with corrugated ribbing worked in two colors using the long-tail cast-on method. The main body features the same fair isle colorwork chart as the sweater. Crown shaping uses paired decreases (ssk and k2tog) placed at regular intervals to create the tapered crown.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Specifications: The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Northampton, a 100% wool yarn with 247 yards per 100-gram skein. This weight and yardage provide excellent stitch definition for fair isle colorwork while offering warmth and durability.
Hat Yarn Requirements: The hat requires one skein each of five colors: Lake Heather (Color A), Pacific (Color B), Dahlia (Color C), Gold (Color D), and Bright Pink (Color E).
Sweater Yarn Requirements: Yarn quantities vary by size. The sweater requires 6 to 9 skeins of White (Color A) depending on size, 2 to 4 skeins of Sage Heather (Color B), and 1 skein each of Bright Blue Heather (Color C), Garnet (Color D), and Ocean Heather (Color E) for all sizes.
Needles and Notions: The pattern uses US size 6 (4.00mm) circular needles in 24" length for working the body in the round, with double-pointed needles of the same size for the crown decreases on both the hat and sweater. Four stitch markers are required to track raglan shaping placement.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in the colorwork pattern. The pattern notes recommend working the hat as your gauge swatch, adjusting needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge before beginning the sweater. This approach allows knitters to test their tension and needle choice on a smaller, quicker project before committing to the larger
