Valley Yarns Oatmeal Afghan
Project Overview
The Valley Yarns Oatmeal Afghan is a beginner-friendly knitted blanket and throw designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This cozy, oatmeal-colored afghan combines simple construction with elegant lace details, making it an ideal portable project for knitters new to blanket-making. The finished afghan measures 36" x 48", 48" x 48", or 48" x 60" depending on which size option you choose, providing versatile sizing for different spaces and preferences.
What Is Being Made
This is a modular blanket constructed from individual knitted squares that are seamed together. The design uses an innovative approach where each 12-inch square is built from two triangle pieces (Triangle A and Triangle B) that are whip-stitched together. The completed squares are then assembled into the full blanket by seaming their eyelet edges. The oatmeal coloring of Valley Yarns Amherst yarn creates a warm, neutral aesthetic suitable for any home décor.
Knitting Techniques
The Valley Yarns Oatmeal Afghan employs several key knitting techniques that make it accessible for beginners while maintaining visual interest:
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the triangles, created by knitting every row. Garter stitch is one of the most fundamental and forgiving stitches, making this project ideal for knitters building their skills.
- Yarn Overs: Strategic yarn overs are worked at the edges of each triangle and incorporated into eyelet rows at the triangle bases. These yarn overs create decorative holes that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes in the seaming process.
- Eyelet Rows: Well-placed eyelet rows appear at the base of each triangle, adding delicate lace detailing to the otherwise solid garter stitch fabric. These eyelets are later used as seaming points when assembling the final blanket.
- Whip Stitching: Triangles are joined together using whip stitch seaming along the yarn over edges, and completed squares are assembled by whip-stitching the eyelet rows together. This seaming technique is worked flat and creates nearly invisible seams.
- Worked Flat: All pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, simplifying the construction process for beginners.
Stitches and Construction Details
The afghan's construction relies on a minimal stitch vocabulary, keeping the project manageable for beginners. Each triangle begins with a single cast-on stitch and increases through yarn overs on alternating rows until reaching the desired size. The pattern specifies making 24, 32, or 40 Triangle A pieces and an equal number of Triangle B pieces, depending on your chosen finished size. These triangles are then paired and seamed to create 12, 16, or 20 individual 12-inch squares. The alternating arrangement of Triangle A and Triangle B creates visual balance within each square. The smallest size requires a 3-by-4 square arrangement (36" x 48"), the medium size uses a 4-by-4 arrangement (48" x 48"), and the largest size features a 4-by-5 arrangement (48" x 60").
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Valley Yarns Oatmeal Afghan is designed to be worked with Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% Merino Wool yarn in the oatmeal colorway. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest version requires 17 skeins, the medium size needs 22 skeins, and the largest requires 27 skeins. Each skein contains 50 grams and 109 yards of yarn. Merino wool provides excellent warmth, softness, and breathability, making it ideal for a cozy blanket that remains comfortable across seasons.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern calls for US size 8 (5.00mm) needles, though you may adjust to a different size if needed to achieve the specified gauge. The target gauge is 4 stitches and 8 rows per 1 inch when worked in garter stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the triangles and squares to reach their intended 12-inch dimensions and for the final blanket to meet the specified finished measurements. The pattern recommends leaving 1-yard tails at the cast-on edges of each triangle for seaming purposes, allowing you to use these tails to join triangles into squares and later use the bound-off tail ends to seam the squares together, which is an efficient yarn-saving technique.
