I bought this yarn to use as the background yarn for scandinavian design hats. I have a dog fur/wool mix yarn that I spin and dye which I use for the pattern/color work in my hats and I was looking for a good, solid wool to use as the background and the inside of the cuff that would be nice against the head as my dog fur/wool yarn can be a bit rough. This was a perfect yarn for my purposes. The cuff is double knit so the amherst yarn is on the inside and my dog fur/wool mix is what shows on the outside.

I have been pleased with all other yarns I have purchased from WEBS, but this was a real disappointment. Perhaps other colors of Amherst don't pill like the charcoal, but I will not wear this sweater out in public. It started pilling almost immediately, and I am not rough on clothes.

      Comments about 3.09 Amherst:

A sweater with cables: lovely to work with, lovely to look at, gorgeous intensity of colour and 100% evenly dyed and spun. Soft and drapey and SO warm. BUT it started pilling immediately and after 2 wears looked so scruffy it had to be relegated to the only-at-home-when-no-callers-expected drawer. Such a disappointment!

            Comments about 3.09 Amherst:

Valley Yarns Amherst in black is perfect for The Ships Project hats for ground troops. This merino wool is easy on the hands (and eyes) and works up quickly on #7 circulars & DPNs, and finished hats feel soft even before blocking. Cable patterns show up distinctly, as do spiral ribs, without making the hat too bulky. I'd been unhappy using Cascade 220 Superwash (in black) for the ground troops' hats--very thin yarn which felt coarse during knitting, and some skeins seemed unevenly spun or "de-flaked". The only con, which isn't a deal-breaker, is the low yardage per skein--109 yards per 50g skein is not enough for a large-sized adult male hat with a ribbed brim (as required for The Ships Project). One skein might be sufficient for a very simple beanie; but I've had to use 2 skeins for each hat I've made for the troops. Still, for me, the Amherst is less expensive than the Cascade and so much nicer for knitting soft but substantial hats. [I will update this review after I knit slipper socks with Amherst.]
