Valley Yarns Five College Sweater

What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Five College Sweater is a seamless, top-down knit sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This intermediate-level project is available in three finished bust measurements: 38 inches, 44 inches, and 50 inches, making it adaptable to various sizes. The sweater is constructed using a seamless method worked in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric from the top of the garment downward.

Techniques Used

Seamless, top-down construction is the primary technique employed in this design. The sweater begins at the shoulders and neckline, with stitches cast on provisionally (though a standard cast-on is acceptable as an alternative). The garment is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows the knitter to create a tube of fabric without interruption. This method provides several advantages: it eliminates seaming, reduces finishing work, and allows for easy fitting adjustments as the piece progresses downward toward the hem.

The pattern incorporates pick-up and knit techniques at key transition points. After completing the back section, the knitter picks up and knits stitches along the cast-on edge to create the front shoulders, working both sides simultaneously with separate balls of yarn. This approach maintains continuity and ensures proper alignment between front and back sections.

Stitches Used

The Five College Sweater employs several stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st) serves as the foundation fabric and is used to establish the gauge for the entire project.
  • Moss stitch (also called seed stitch variation) is used as a textural element. Worked over a multiple of 2 stitches, Moss stitch alternates knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, creating a dense, reversible fabric. The pattern repeats every 4 rows.
  • Seed Chevron is a decorative panel stitch that creates a chevron or zigzag visual effect. This stitch is worked in multiple row-repeats (9 repeats for the 38-inch size, 10 repeats for the 50-inch size), forming a prominent design element across the back of the sweater.
  • Seed Diamond is a textured panel stitch worked over 8 stitches, creating a diamond-shaped motif. This stitch appears on the shoulders and contributes to the sweater's overall patterned design.
  • Beaded Band is a decorative panel stitch (7 stitches) that frames other stitch patterns and adds visual definition to the design.
  • Furrows is another accent stitch used in combination with other panels to create the shoulder shaping and visual structure.
  • Double Welt is worked after the main patterned sections to create a finished edge or hem detail.

Materials and Gauge

The Five College Sweater is designed to be knit with Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% merino wool yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: 11 balls (approximately 1,199 yards total) for the 38-inch size, 13 balls for the 44-inch size, and 15 balls for the 50-inch size. Each ball contains 50 grams and 109 yards of yarn in the color Natural.

Needles required: Size 8 (5mm) 32-inch circular needles and size 8 (5mm) double-pointed needles, or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. The use of both circular and double-pointed needles accommodates the transition from working in the round on the body to working smaller circumferences at the neckline or cuffs.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 26 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a top-down seamless construction where adjustments become more difficult once stitches are cast on.

Construction Overview

The sweater construction begins with the back section. For the 44-inch size, 91 stitches are provisionally cast on, and a purl row is worked before beginning the pattern. The back features a combination of Beaded Band panels and Seed Chevron stitch, creating a textured, patterned surface. After completing the back (72 rows for the 38-inch size, 80 rows for the 50-inch size), a
