Valley Yarns Clementine: A-Line Tunic Dress for Children

Project Overview

The Valley Yarns Clementine is a knitted A-Line tunic dress designed by Julie Turjoman, created to grow with modern children. This versatile garment functions first as a dress and later transitions into a tunic as the child grows. The design combines practical construction with stylish details, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to create heirloom-quality children's knitwear.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a long-sleeved A-Line tunic dress featuring a Peter Pan collar and a distinctive wide contrast color band. The garment is available in seven sizes ranging from 6-12 months through 10-12 years, with finished chest measurements from 19¾ inches to 31 inches. The A-Line silhouette provides comfortable fit with 2-4 inches of positive ease, allowing for growth and layering.

Techniques Used

The Clementine employs several key construction techniques suited to the advanced beginner skill level:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and try-ons during the knitting process.
  • Flat Knitting: The main body pieces are worked flat on circular needles, providing stability and ease of shaping.
  • Seamed Assembly: Pieces are joined together using seaming techniques, creating neat, professional finishes at side seams and sleeve attachments.
  • Three-Needle Bind-Off: This technique is used to join pieces together while binding off simultaneously, creating a strong, elastic seam ideal for shoulder or collar closures.
  • A-Line Decreasing: Symmetric decrease rounds shape the garment into the characteristic A-Line silhouette, with decreases worked at marked side points to maintain pattern alignment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Clementine combines fundamental and decorative stitches to create visual interest and structure:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the main body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when blocked.
  • Chevron Stitch Pattern: Featured in the wide contrast color band, this decorative pattern creates a distinctive V-shaped repeat. The chevron stitch is worked at a slightly tighter gauge of 26 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches when blocked, due to the pattern's density.
  • Garter Stitch: Used for ribbing and edging details, including the Peter Pan collar and cuff finishes, providing elasticity and a refined appearance.
  • Basic Decreases: The pattern employs ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) decreases for shaping, ensuring the A-Line silhouette maintains its symmetry and visual balance.

Materials and Yarn

The Clementine is designed to be worked with Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Sport, a practical choice for children's garments. This yarn is composed of 100% Extrafine Superwash Merino Wool, offering easy care through machine washing—an essential feature for active children's clothing. Each skein provides 153 yards at 50 grams.

Yarn Requirements: The main color (MC) requires 3 to 6 skeins depending on size, while the contrast color (CC) for the chevron band requires 1 to 2 skeins. The pattern shown features Ice Blue as the main color and Burgundy as the contrast color, creating a classic, timeless aesthetic.

Needles, Hooks, and Notions

The pattern requires US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-30-inch lengths for the main body work, with an additional US 5 needle reserved for the Three-Needle Bind-Off technique. US 4 (3.5mm) needles in 16-inch length and double-pointed needles are used for ribbed edgings and collar work, creating a tighter gauge for elastic finishes.

A Size E crochet hook is included in the materials list, likely for provisional cast-on or finishing techniques. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders or waste yarn for managing live stitches, and a tapestry needle for seaming and we
