Product Description
Valley Yarns Cormorant is a women’s gorgeous colorwork
yoke pullover knit in Haydenville DK. This deep yoke drapes over the shoulders
to form cap sleeves that look great dressed up or down. Cormorant is knit in
the round from the bottom up to the underarms, then divided and later seamed to
the base of the yoke. The scoop neck yoke is worked separately in the round in
stranded colorwork from the cast-on edge to the neck. Haydenville DK has a
gentle, exquisite sheen that is ideal for cables and colorwork due to the crisp
stitch definition it will provide. The colorwork patterns are in chart form
only.

Valley Yarns Cormorant Cardigan: Stranded Colorwork Yoke Pullover
What is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Cormorant is a feminine yoke pullover cardigan designed by Julie Turjoman. This advanced-level knitting project features a charming two-piece construction with a deep yoke that drapes elegantly over the shoulders to form cap sleeves. The garment includes waist shaping and a scoop neckline, creating a flattering silhouette. Available in sizes XS through 4XL with finished bust measurements ranging from 32 inches to 60 inches, the Cormorant accommodates 1 to 2 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.
Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques that make it suitable for experienced crafters:
- Stranded Colorwork: The signature feature of the Cormorant is its deep yoke worked in stranded colorwork technique, where multiple colors are carried across rows to create intricate patterned designs. This technique is balanced by a single-color body, allowing the colorwork to be the focal point of the garment.
- Worked Flat Construction: The pattern is worked in just two pieces using flat knitting methods, which simplifies construction while maintaining structural integrity.
- Seamed Assembly: The two pieces are seamed together, creating clean, professional-looking seams that contribute to the garment's polished appearance.
- Neckline Knit Bound: The scoop neckline features a knit-bound finish, providing a refined edge that complements the overall design.
- Waist Shaping: Strategic decreases and increases create flattering waist definition throughout the body of the garment.
Stitches Used
The Cormorant primarily utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed at an advanced level:
- Stockinette Stitch: Forms the base fabric for the body of the pullover, creating a smooth, classic knit surface.
- Stranded Colorwork Stitch Pattern: Used exclusively in the yoke section, this technique requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously to produce the decorative patterned design.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: Combined to create ribbing and textural elements, particularly in edge finishing.
- Decrease Stitches (K2tog): Used for waist shaping and yoke decreases to achieve the garment's fitted silhouette.
- Increase Stitches (K1fb): Employed for shaping and construction details throughout the pattern.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn Specifications: The Cormorant is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Haydenville DK, a soft superwash wool and acrylic blend composed of 60% Superwash Merino Wool and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This fiber content provides durability, easy care, and a luxuriously soft hand. Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 136 yards.
Yarn Requirements by Size: The pattern calls for three colors of Valley Yarns Haydenville DK:
- Main Color (MC) in Sand: 5 to 10 skeins depending on size (XS requires 5 skeins; 4XL requires 10 skeins)
- Contrasting Color 1 (CC1) in Grey: 2 to 3 skeins depending on size
- Contrasting Color 2 (CC2) in Spring Leaf: 1 to 2 skeins depending on size
Needle Requirements: The pattern requires three sets of circular needles in different sizes to accommodate gauge adjustments and construction phases:
- US Size 5 (3.75mm): 16-inch and 32- to 40-inch circular needles, used for initial ribbing and stockinette sections
- US Size 6 (4mm): 16-inch and 32- to 40-inch circular needles, used for stranded colorwork sections to accommodate the slightly looser gauge required by the technique
- US Size 4 (3.50mm): 16-inch and 32- to 40-inch
