Valley Yarns Peregrine: Baby Pullover and Beanie Set

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Peregrine is a coordinated two-piece set designed for babies, consisting of a pullover sweater and a matching beanie. The pullover is a beginner-friendly garment featuring button closures along one shoulder for easy dressing and undressing of infants. The matching beanie complements the set and works up quickly, making this an ideal project for baby shower gifts. The set is available in multiple infant sizes ranging from newborn through 24 months.

Pullover Specifications

The pullover is offered in four size options: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, and 18-24 months, with finished chest measurements ranging from 17¾ inches to 23 inches. The design incorporates 1 to 3 inches of positive ease for comfortable fit and movement. The garment features simple textured borders at the hem and sleeves, with a straightforward construction that eliminates body shaping, making it an excellent first sweater project for knitters developing their skills.

Beanie Specifications

The matching beanie is sized for ages 0-3 months, 6-12 months, and 18-24 months, with finished circumferences of 14¼ inches, 15 inches, and 16¾ inches respectively. The quick-knitting design allows crafters to complete this accessory in a short timeframe, perfect for coordinating with the pullover.

Techniques Used

  • Seamless construction: Both the pullover and beanie are worked seamlessly, eliminating the need for seaming pieces together after completion
  • Worked in the round: The primary construction method uses circular needles and double-pointed needles to create seamless, tubular fabric
  • Worked flat: Certain sections of the pullover are worked flat on circular needles using back-and-forth rows
  • Bottom-up construction: The garments are knitted from the bottom edge upward toward the neckline and crown

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Peregrine set employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level crafters. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric throughout both garments, creating a smooth, classic appearance. Textured stitch patterns are incorporated at the hem and sleeve edges, adding visual interest and definition to these border areas. The pattern utilizes standard abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), knit two together (K2tog) for decreases, and various increase techniques to shape the garments as needed.

Materials and Yarn

The Peregrine set is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Montague, a 100% cotton yarn available in the Charcoal colorway shown in the pattern samples. The pullover requires 3 skeins for the smallest size (0-6 months) up to 6 skeins for the largest size (18-24 months), with each skein weighing 50 grams and providing 110 yards of yardage. The beanie requires 1 skein of the same yarn, making the total yardage requirement manageable for a quick project. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for baby garments, offering breathability, durability, and easy care through machine washing.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for two sizes of needles to achieve proper gauge and fabric control. US size 7 (4.50 mm) circular needles in 16 to 24-inch lengths for the pullover and 9-inch length for the beanie serve as the primary needles for working the main fabric. US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in corresponding lengths are used for ribbed or textured border sections. Double-pointed needles (dpns) in both sizes are required for working small circumferences, particularly the crown of the beanie. Additional tools include stitch markers (including a locking stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats), stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, two ½-inch diameter buttons, a sewing needle, and matching thread for securing the shoulder buttons.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches when worked in stockinette and texture stitches on the larger (US size 7) needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the garments
