Valley Yarns A Peregrine Blanket

What Is Being Made

The A Peregrine Blanket is a versatile stroller blanket and lap throw designed by Julie Turjoman. This project offers two finished size options: a Baby Blanket measuring 40" x 36½" or a larger Lap Blanket measuring 51¼" x 72". The blanket is ideal as a shower gift or everyday layer for a busy baby's weekend activities, combining practicality with an attractive textured appearance.

Techniques Used

This blanket is worked bottom-up and seamless, meaning it is constructed as a single continuous piece without requiring seaming. The blanket is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters of all experience levels. The straightforward construction and beginner-friendly skill level make this an excellent project for those new to blanket knitting.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The A Peregrine Blanket features a combination of fundamental knitting stitches that create visual interest and texture:

  • Garter Stitch forms the borders at the hem and top of the blanket. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a reversible fabric with distinctive horizontal ridges. The blanket includes 1" garter stitch borders on all edges and a 6-row garter stitch finish at the top.
  • Grid Stitch Pattern covers the main body of the blanket, creating an allover checkerboard grid texture across the surface. This stitch pattern is worked over 18 rows and repeats across the width of the piece. The grid stitch pattern is repeated a total of 12 times for the Baby Blanket size or 25 times for the Lap Blanket size, with an additional partial repeat of rows 1-9 to achieve the desired finished length.
  • The pattern also incorporates knit through back loop (K1 tbl) and purl through back loop (P1 tbl) stitches as components of the grid texture stitch pattern.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The A Peregrine Blanket is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Montague, a 100% organic cotton yarn. Yarn requirements vary by size: the Baby Blanket requires 9 hanks, while the Lap Blanket requires 24 hanks. Each hank contains 50 grams and 110 yards of yarn. The pattern specifies Charcoal as the recommended color.

Knitters should use US size 7 (4.50 mm) needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 26 rows measured over 4 inches in Grid stitch after blocking. Additional materials needed include stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.

Construction Details

The blanket begins with a Long Tail cast-on of either 146 stitches for the Baby Blanket or 180 stitches for the Lap Blanket. After the initial cast-on, knitters establish the garter stitch borders by knitting 5 stitches, placing a marker, then working the Grid Stitch pattern across the center stitches (with the pattern repeat worked 8 times for the Baby Blanket or 10 times for the Lap Blanket), placing another marker, and knitting the final 5 stitches in garter stitch. This structure is maintained throughout the blanket, with the Grid Stitch pattern worked in the center while the outer 5 stitches on each side remain in garter stitch for a finished border effect. Once the desired length is achieved, the blanket is finished with 6 rows of garter stitch before binding off all stitches loosely.
