Valley Yarns F- Sweet Curacao Bag: Felted Knit Tote
What Is Being Made
The Sweet Curacao Bag is a felted knit tote designed as a versatile carry-all for travel and everyday use. This project creates a colorful striped bag inspired by the Caribbean island of Curacao, featuring a main body worked in stockinette stitch with an I-cord handle accent. The finished bag transforms dramatically through the felting process, shrinking from its pre-felted dimensions of 18" high x 16" long x 6" deep to approximately 12" high x 14" long x 4" deep after felting, resulting in a sturdy, compact tote.
Techniques Used
Felting is the defining technique for this project. After the knitted pieces are assembled, the entire bag undergoes a machine-felting process using hot water, laundry detergent, and agitation in a standard washing machine. This intentional shrinkage and matting of the fibers creates a dense, durable fabric that transforms the loose knit fabric into a tightly felted usable carry-all. The heat and mechanical action cause the wool fibers to bond together, significantly altering the bag's dimensions and creating a more structured, finished appearance.
Seaming is used to construct the bag. The project employs mattress stitch seaming to join the side panels of the bag together before felting occurs. This technique creates nearly invisible seams by stitching through the horizontal bars between edge stitches, resulting in a professional finish that remains durable through the felting process.
Worked flat construction means the main bag panels are knitted on straight needles in flat rows rather than in the round. The pattern specifies working a 16" panel for the front with colorful horizontal stripes, then repeating the same striped pattern on the opposite side for the back panel. Side panels are worked to measure 18" in length, allowing for adjustment by adding additional rows if needed to achieve the correct dimensions.
I-cord handles are created using double-pointed needles with a 4-stitch I-cord technique. Two handles are made, each 40" long, with alternating color sections of approximately 6-8 inches each, creating a striped effect that complements the bag's body. The I-cord handles are attached to the felted bag by cutting small holes through single stitches at marked locations on the schematic and forcing the cord through these openings.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the bag's fabric. This basic knit stitch creates the smooth, flat surface ideal for the horizontal color stripes that define the Sweet Curacao design. The pattern incorporates color work through simple stripe sequences, changing yarn colors every 5 rows to create the distinctive multicolor effect. The color progression follows a specific pattern, alternating between single and double strands of different colors to create visual variation and depth in the striping.
The I-cord stitch technique is used for the handles. This creates a small tubular cord by working 4 stitches on double-pointed needles in a continuous spiral, producing a rope-like handle that is both functional and decorative. Yarn ends are run in to finish the project neatly before felting.
Materials
This project uses Valley Yarns Berkshire yarn, a wool fiber ideal for felting. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of color A and 1 skein each of colors B, C, D, E, and F. Two colorway options are provided: the Blue Lagoon colorway featuring colors such as Royal, Navy, Dark Teal, Hunter, Lime, and Turquoise; and the Tequila Sunrise colorway with Red, Fuschia, Rose, Orange, Pumpkin, and Gold.
Needles required include size 15 straight needles (or the size needed to obtain gauge) for working the flat bag panels, and 2 size 15 double-pointed needles for creating the I-cord handles. The gauge is 9 stitches x 14 rows = 4" before felting, which is important to understand as the fabric will shrink considerably during the felting process. Additional materials needed for finishing include sharp scissors for creating handle attachment holes and standard laundry detergent for the machine-felting process.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as advanced beginner, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience. While the basic techniques—stockinette stitch, color changes, seaming, and I-cord—are relatively straightforward, the project requires attention to detail in maintaining consistent gauge, accurate measurements, and proper
