The Four Towels, One Warp project teaches four distinct weaving techniques, all executed on the same warp foundation. The design incorporates striped patterns throughout, created by varying weft colors and yarns across the towels. This approach allows weavers to explore the versatility of rigid heddle loom weaving while efficiently using a single prepared warp. Tea towels are highlighted as ideal beginner-friendly projects for technique exploration, as they are short enough to complete quickly and remain functional even if execution is imperfect.
This project requires a rigid heddle loom with a minimum 20-inch weaving width and a 10-dent heddle. Additional equipment includes 4 shuttles or bobbins for managing multiple weft colors, 2 pick-up sticks measuring 22 inches or longer, coordinating sewing thread for finishing, and a crochet hook. The loom is dressed with a doubled warp, meaning 2 threads occupy each slot and hole of the heddle, with each thread counting as a separate end.
The warp is prepared at 4.5 yards in length with 198 ends that are doubled to create 396 total ends. The warp width in the reed measures 19 8/10 inches. The sett is 10 epi (ends per inch), achieved by placing 2 doubled ends per dent in the 10-dent heddle. Individual towel descriptions specify the picks per inch (ppi) for each towel's unique weave structure.
The warp is woven using Valley Yarns 8/2 Cotton in Admiral Blue (#2859). This yarn is 100% unmercerized cotton with a yardage of 3,360 yards per pound and is sold on 1-pound cones. The project requires 1,782 yards of warp yarn.

I'm on the third towel, and the lace pattern instructions are not really clear. I had to un-weave about four inches, and tweak the pattern to make it look right. I also don't love having to wind the 8/2 yarn doubled or tripled, when I only have one cone, but other than that, it's a great way to teach myself some new techniques, and create some beautiful towels. It's been a fun project.
