What Is Being Made
The Valley Yarns WEBS Emerging Designer Series Ladder Ponchette is a quick and easy poncho-style capelet designed by Angelia Robinson. This lightweight layering piece features an open, airy construction perfect for warm weather wear. The finished garment measures 20" wide and 15" long, creating a versatile accessory that drapes elegantly over the shoulders.
Construction Method
This capelet is worked using a bottom-up, flat construction approach. The design consists of two identical crocheted pieces that are subsequently seamed together to create the finished garment. This modular construction method makes the project manageable and allows for easier gauge checking and adjustments before final assembly.
Primary Stitch and Pattern
The Ladder Ponchette showcases a distinctive ladder mesh pattern stitch that creates an open, lacy aesthetic. This pattern is built on fundamental crochet stitches including:
- Chain stitches (ch) – used to create the open spaces characteristic of the mesh
- Double crochet (dc) – provides structure at edges and turning points
- Single crochet (sc) – anchors the pattern and creates definition within the mesh openings
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and securing stitches
Special Techniques
The pattern incorporates several specialized crochet techniques to enhance the finished appearance:
- Reverse single crochet edging – applied to both the neck and bottom edges, this technique creates a neat, finished border by working from left to right (opposite the standard direction). The reverse single crochet is worked by inserting the hook into the next stitch to the right, yarning over, pulling up a loop, then pulling through both loops on the hook.
- Wet blocking – the finished pieces are blocked to precise measurements (7" x 23" before seaming) to ensure proper gauge and even tension throughout the mesh pattern
- Strategic seaming – the two pieces are sewn together according to a seaming diagram to create the capelet's final shape
Yarn and Materials
The Ladder Ponchette is crafted using Valley Yarns Longmeadow, a practical blend of 60% cotton and 40% microfiber. This fiber composition creates a breathable, lightweight fabric ideal for layering in warm seasons. The project requires only 2 skeins of yarn, with each skein containing 117 yards and weighing 50 grams. The sample shown is worked in color 05 Fushia, a vibrant hue that adds visual interest to the open mesh construction.
Hook Size and Gauge
This project is worked with a US size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or a size adjusted to obtain the specified gauge. The pattern gauge is 2 stitch repeats and 8 rows measuring 4 inches (10 cm) in the pattern stitch after wet blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the garment to drape correctly and achieve the intended finished dimensions.
Skill Level
The Ladder Ponchette is classified as a beginner-friendly project, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to garment construction. While the pattern incorporates lace techniques and seaming, the straightforward mesh stitch repeat and short overall row count (46 rows per piece) keep the project accessible and quick to complete.
Pattern Structure
Each of the two identical ponchette pieces begins with a foundation chain of 33 stitches. The pattern repeats a simple mesh motif across 46 rows, with the core pattern repeat consisting of chain-5 spaces, single crochet anchors, and chain-3 spaces that create the characteristic ladder appearance. The final row includes a stitch decrease (2 single crochet stitches worked together in chain-3 spaces) to shape the piece. Once both pieces are completed and blocked, they are seamed together and finished with a reverse single crochet neckband worked in the round.
