Product Description
Whitehall Knitted Sweater in Rowan Brushed Fleece
What Is Being Made
Whitehall is a knitted sweater designed as a beginner-friendly project from Quails Studio. This pullover sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from a chest fit of 71-76cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157cm (60-62 inches), making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The finished garment features a classic construction with a back, front, and two sleeves, with the front panel measuring approximately 10cm shorter than the back for added design interest.
Techniques and Construction
The Whitehall sweater employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner crafters. The garment begins with cast-on stitches worked on 6mm needles, establishing the foundation for both the body and sleeves. Ribbed edging is used at the cuff of each sleeve, worked in a basic knit-one-purl-one pattern repeated across the row, creating an elastic finish that fits snugly around the wrist. The body is constructed primarily in stockinette stitch, the most fundamental knitting stitch pattern.
Shaping is incorporated through strategic increases and decreases. The sleeves feature paired increases worked at each end using the make-one (M1) technique, creating a gradual widening from the cuff upward. The frequency of these increases varies by size: smaller sizes increase every fourth row for ten rows followed by every sixth row for three rows, while larger sizes follow different increment patterns to accommodate the extended measurements. Shoulder shaping is achieved through casting off groups of stitches at the beginning of rows, creating the angled shoulder line typical of fitted sweaters.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the smooth face of stockinette stitch
- Purl stitch (P) – used in ribbing and reverse stockinette applications
- Ribbed stitch (K1, P1) – creates the elastic cuff on sleeves
- Make-one increase (M1) – used to add stitches for sleeve shaping
- Cast-on – establishes the initial stitches for all pieces
- Cast-off – secures stitches and creates finished edges, particularly for shoulder shaping
Materials and Tools
The Whitehall sweater is worked in Rowan Brushed Fleece yarn, photographed here in the colorway Rock 273. Brushed Fleece is a 50-gram ball weight yarn, providing a soft, textured finish. The pattern requires 6mm (US 10) knitting needles in both straight and circular formats: one pair of straight needles for working flat pieces (the back, front, and sleeves) and a 40cm circular needle for the neckband. Additional notions include a stitch holder for temporarily securing stitches and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 13 stitches and 19 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using 6mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for the sweater to fit properly across all nine available sizes. The sizing range accommodates chest measurements from 71-76cm through 152-157cm, with corresponding finished chest measurements of the garment ranging from 108cm to 190cm.
