Willow & Lark Helena Sweater
What is Being Made
The Helena Sweater is an advanced knit garment from Willow & Lark's Heath Solids Collection, designed as a sophisticated pullover available in eight sizes ranging from 76-81 cm to 137-143 cm chest circumference (30-32 inches to 54-56 inches). The finished sweater features a back width measurement from 45.5 cm to 76 cm (18 inches to 30 inches) and a length to back neck ranging from 58 cm to 70 cm (22¾ inches to 27½ inches), with sleeve lengths between 45 cm and 48 cm (17¾ inches to 19 inches).
Knitting Techniques
The Helena Sweater employs several advanced knitting techniques that make it suitable for experienced crafters. The garment is worked seamlessly in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming pieces together and creates a continuous fabric. This construction method requires working with circular needles and double-pointed needles throughout the project.
Cable work is a prominent design feature in this sweater. The pattern includes cable stitches that are manipulated using a cable needle—a specialized tool that temporarily holds stitches while others are worked, creating the distinctive twisted rope-like texture cables are known for. The specific cable technique referenced in the pattern is C3B (cable 3 back), which involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle, placing it at the back of the work, knitting 1 stitch, and then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
The bottom-up construction method means the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the neckline, allowing for easy length adjustments during the knitting process.
Stitches Used
The Helena Sweater is primarily constructed using stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the base of the garment. Stocking stitch is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round as this pattern does.
Cable stitches are integrated into the stocking stitch base, adding textural interest and visual complexity to the design. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including increases (inc), decreases (dec), and make 1 stitch (m1) techniques to shape the garment at the armholes, neckline, and sleeve cap.
Materials and Tools
The Helena Sweater pattern is designed to be worked with Willow & Lark Heath Solids yarn, available exclusively at lovecrafts.com. The sample shown is in Cornflower Blue. Each ball contains 50 grams (1¾ ounces) of yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size from 12 balls for the smallest size up to 14 balls for the largest size.
The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to achieve proper fabric tension and accommodate different sections of the sweater. Circular knitting needles in 3.25mm (US 3) are used for ribbed edgings, available in both 40 cm (16 inch) and 80 cm (32 inch) lengths. Circular knitting needles in 4mm (US 6) are used for the main body and sleeves, also in both 40 cm and 80 cm lengths. Additionally, double-pointed needles in both 3.25mm (US 3) and 4mm (US 6) are needed for working the crown of the sleeves in the round.
A cable needle is essential for manipulating stitches during cable work, and stitch markers help track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project. The pattern specifies a tension of 21 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4mm (US 6) needles, which is critical for achieving the correct finished measurements.
