Willow & Lark Sunrise Pullover by Stephanie Earp

What is Being Made

The Sunrise Pullover is a seamless, top-down knitted sweater from the Willow & Lark Impressionists Collection, designed by Stephanie Earp. This pullover is available in eight sizes ranging from 76 cm to 135 cm bust circumference (30 to 53 inches), with finished chest measurements from 84 cm to 144 cm (33 to 56¾ inches). The finished length varies between 48 cm and 54 cm (18¾ to 21¼ inches), and all sizes feature a consistent sleeve seam length of 28 cm (11 inches).

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several advanced techniques that create visual interest and structural integrity. The sweater is worked seamlessly in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the length before binding off. The pattern incorporates Linen Stitch, a textured stitch pattern that adds depth and visual complexity to the finished piece. A 2-Colour Cast On technique is used to begin the project, combining the main color and a contrast color held together for a refined edge. The design also features a Double Increase technique, which allows for shaping and increases two stitches from a single stitch, contributing to the garment's tailored fit.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Sunrise Pullover relies on fundamental knitting stitches combined with specialty techniques. Knit stitches form the foundation of the fabric, while the Linen Stitch (LSI) creates a distinctive textured pattern throughout the body and sleeves. The Pick Up and Purl technique is used to add stitches in specific areas, and the Double Increase method provides strategic shaping. These stitches work together to create a fabric with visual texture while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a well-fitting pullover.

Materials and Tools

The Sunrise Pullover is designed to be worked in Willow & Lark Ramble, a 100% wool yarn in DK weight. The pattern calls for three coordinating colorways from the Ramble line: Fossil (color 131) as the main color, Rhubarb (color 127) as the first contrast color, and Straw (color 114) as the second contrast color. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 4 balls of Fossil and 4 balls of Rhubarb for the smallest size, up to 7 balls of each for the largest size, with 1 to 2 balls of Straw depending on size.

The project requires multiple circular knitting needles in two sizes. 5.00mm (UK 6, US 8) circular needles in 40 cm (16 inch), 60 cm (24 inch), and 80 cm (32 inch) lengths are used for the main fabric, while 3.50mm (UK 9, US 4) circular needles in 40 cm and 80 cm lengths are used for ribbed edgings. Additional tools include 2 stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 44 rounds measuring 10 cm (4 inches) square when worked in pattern using 5.00mm (US 8) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and proper fit of the garment.
