Wonderland Yarns Wicked Practical Shawl

What Is Being Made

The Wicked Practical Shawl is a knitted wrap designed by Stephanie Shiman that combines efficiency with elegant proportions. This shawl is named for its practical construction—requiring only a single skein of yarn with virtually no waste—while delivering an impressive finished wingspan of 80 inches and a depth of 16 inches at its deepest point. The design features a distinctive curved swoosh shape created by strategic increases worked at the end of the pattern, ensuring the shawl maintains its intended silhouette without requiring complex shaping throughout.

Techniques Used

This shawl is constructed using seamless knitting worked flat on circular needles, allowing for efficient stitch management across the wide wingspan. The design employs lace techniques to create openwork sections that contribute to the shawl's elegant drape and visual interest. The pattern incorporates yarn overs and strategic decreases to build the lace motifs while simultaneously shaping the garment. A key technical consideration emphasized in the pattern is maintaining loose edge stitches, particularly at the start of right-side rows, to ensure clean selvage edges that block evenly and maintain the intended finished dimensions.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The foundational stitch forming the stockinette base of the shawl
  • Purl (P): Used on wrong-side rows to create stockinette texture
  • Yarn Over (YO): Creates the decorative openwork and lace pattern while simultaneously increasing stitch count
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs and shape the shawl's curved swoosh

Materials

The Wicked Practical Shawl is designed to be worked in Wonderland Yarns "Mad Hatter" sport weight yarn, a 100% superwash merino fiber offered in a 344-yard, 4-ounce skein. The pattern is shown in the limited edition colorway "New England." Construction requires a US size 9 circular needle (or the size necessary to achieve proper gauge), with an optional US size 10.5 needle available for binding off. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and pins or wires for blocking. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. The superwash merino fiber provides easy care and resilience, making this shawl both beautiful and practical for regular wear.
