What is Being Made

The Zoé Scarf is a knitted wrap designed by Martin Storey for the MODE Collection. This is a luxurious accessory measuring 43 cm (17 inches) wide and 200 cm (78¾ inches) long, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering and styling versatility. The finished piece combines two identically constructed sections that are seamlessly joined together using a simultaneous cast-off technique.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its sophisticated finished look. The pattern utilizes chart-based colorwork, requiring knitters to follow a detailed stitch pattern from a provided chart. The construction method involves creating two identical sections that are worked separately to approximately 100 cm each, then joined using a special technique where both sections are held with right sides together and cast off simultaneously, taking corresponding stitches from each needle together. This creates a seamless, professional join.

The pattern also incorporates stranded colorwork techniques, with guidance to carry stranded yarns over no more than three stitches at a time and to catch them under and over the working color to ensure neat, elastic edges that maintain their shape. The pattern notes that floating yarns should sit neatly at the back of the work for a polished finish.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Zoé Scarf features a 14-stitch pattern repeat that is repeated 6 times across each row, creating a balanced, symmetrical design. The pattern itself repeats over 40 rows, and knitters continue working in pattern from the chart until the first section measures approximately 100 cm. Special abbreviations used in this pattern include p2sso (pass 2 slipped stitches over) and sL2togK (slip next 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together), which are decorative decrease techniques that add visual interest to the colorwork design.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This project is worked using Rowan Summerlite 4ply yarn, a lightweight, breathable yarn ideal for wraps and layering pieces. The pattern calls for 6 balls of 50-gram skeins of Summerlite 4ply. The photographed sample is shown in Navy Ink 429, though the yarn is available in other colors within the Rowan range.

Knitting is executed on 3mm (US 2/3) needles (also referred to as no. 11 in UK sizing). The pattern specifies a tension of 23 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm measured over pattern using 3mm needles. Achieving correct tension is emphasized as critical to the shape and size of the finished wrap, and knitters are advised to knit a gauge swatch of 5 to 10 more stitches and rows than specified in the pattern to ensure accuracy before beginning the project.

Finishing

Once both sections are complete and joined, the wrap is finished by pressing according to standard blocking instructions provided on the pattern information page, which helps set the stitches and ensures the piece lies flat and maintains its intended dimensions.
