Product Description
Berroco Claudette is a cabled beret and matching gloves knit from
the bottom up in the round using Arno. The beret features an allover cable
pattern that is incorporated into the crown shaping. The gloves are worked in
stockinette stitch with a single cable motif on the back of the hand. Arno from
Berroco is a fantastic blend of cotton and Merino wool perfect for cool weather
accessories. Arno has a gorgeous sheen and soft hand with an interesting
construction—the wool fibers are blown into a cotton mesh tube, resulting in
lighter than air fabrics that have incredible warmth. The cable patterns are
in chart form only.

Berroco Claudette Knit Hat and Gloves Set
Project Overview
Claudette is an intermediate-level knitting pattern from Berroco Book #408, designed by Alison Green. This coordinated accessory set includes both a textured hat and matching gloves, perfect for creating a cohesive winter wardrobe. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and uses Berroco Arno yarn in the elegant Wisteria colorway.
Hat Construction and Finished Measurements
The hat features a fitted ribbed cuff that measures approximately 17 inches around, expanding to approximately 24 inches around the widest section, with a finished height of 8½ inches. The design combines ribbed and charted pattern sections to create visual interest and a professional finish.
Gloves Construction and Finished Measurements
The matching gloves are sized to fit hands measuring approximately 6 inches around, with a total length of 10½ inches from cuff to the tip of the middle finger. The gloves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles, allowing for a seamless construction.
Techniques and Stitches Used
- Tubular Cast-On: The hat pattern employs a tubular cast-on method using waste yarn, creating a professional, seamless edge on the ribbed cuff
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): Used as the primary stitch for smooth fabric sections
- Ribbed Knitting: Creates the fitted cuff sections on both the hat and gloves
- Charted Pattern: A stitch pattern worked from a chart adds texture and visual design to the hat
- Cable Techniques: Cable needles are required, indicating cable stitch elements in the design
- Seamless In-the-Round Construction: Both pieces are knit circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles to eliminate seaming
Yarn Requirements
This pattern uses Berroco Arno yarn, a 50-gram ball weight. The complete set requires 2 balls of yarn for the hat (color #5036 Wisteria) and 1 ball for the gloves. When making the complete set, the leftover yarn from the hat is sufficient to complete the gloves. If making only the gloves, Berroco recommends purchasing an extra ball to ensure adequate yardage, as the original sample used the entire 50-gram ball.
Needles and Notions
For the Hat: The pattern requires 16-inch circular needles in sizes 3 (3.25 mm) and 6 (4.00 mm), one set of size 6 (4.00 mm) double-pointed needles for the crown shaping, a cable needle, one stitch marker, waste yarn for the tubular cast-on, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
For the Gloves: One set each of double-pointed needles in sizes 3 (3.25 mm) and 6 (4.00 mm), a cable needle, five stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of rounds), waste yarn to hold stitches during construction, and a tapestry needle.
Gauge and Pattern Notes
Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished measurements. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. When working the charted pattern sections, the gauge is 32 stitches and 44 rounds over 4 inches on the larger needles. Knitters should take time to swatch and check gauge before beginning the project to ensure the finished pieces match the intended dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of techniques—including tubular cast-on, charted patterns, cable work, and seamless in-the-round construction—requires familiarity with fundamental knitting skills and the ability to read pattern instructions and stitch charts.
