Tahki Yarns Ventura Poncho is a stunning women’s accessory, perfect to wear on sunny spring days and cool summer nights. The poncho is knit in Tandem, an excellent multicolored cotton and viscose yarn that doesn’t take away from stitch patterning. Ventura is an easy knit flat from the bottom up, starting with a garter stitch border, then in a ridge stitch pattern. Bind off the center stitches for the neck opening, then continue in a ridge stitch pattern and end with a garter stitch border. The ridge stitch pattern is in written form only.

What is Being Made

The Ventura Poncho is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Teresa Chorzepa that combines comfort with contemporary style. This poncho features a distinctive construction with a neck opening, making it easy to slip on and wear. Available in three sizes—Small/Medium, Large/XL, and 2X/3X—the poncho offers width measurements ranging from 37½ to 45½ inches and lengths from 17½ to 19½ inches, accommodating various body types and style preferences. The finished piece creates an elegant layering garment suitable for casual or semi-formal occasions.

Techniques Used

This poncho is worked flat on circular needles, making it accessible for knitters who prefer traditional flat construction over working in the round. The pattern employs a strategic combination of stitch techniques to create visual interest and structural definition. The garment begins with a cast-on edge and progresses through multiple sections, each worked with specific stitch patterns to establish the poncho's overall shape and drape. The construction includes a deliberate neck shaping technique where stitches are bound off and then recast to create the neck opening, a method that provides clean edges and proper fit around the neckline.

Stitches Used

The Ventura Poncho utilizes two primary stitches that work together to create the finished design:

  • Garter Stitch: This foundational stitch is created by knitting every row, resulting in a bumpy, textured fabric with excellent elasticity. Garter stitch is used for the border sections (the first and last 15 stitches on each row) and for transition rows throughout the pattern. This stitch provides structural stability and creates a finished edge that frames the central design.
  • Ridge Stitch: The main body of the poncho features Ridge Stitch, a four-row repeat pattern that alternates between purl and knit rows to create distinctive horizontal ridges. This stitch pattern (Row 1: Purl, Row 2: Knit, Row 3: Knit, Row 4: Purl) produces a visually interesting texture while maintaining a consistent gauge of 15 stitches and 25 rows per 4 inches.

Materials and Tools

The Ventura Poncho is designed to be created using Tahki Yarns TANDEM, a sophisticated blend yarn composed of 28% cotton, 28% viscose, 28% nylon, and 16% acrylic. This fiber composition creates a yarn with excellent drape, breathability, and durability. Depending on the size selected, the project requires 9 to 12 balls of yarn, with each ball weighing 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and containing 142 yards (130 meters). The yarn is worked in color #023 lakeside, a versatile shade suitable for various wardrobe combinations. Construction requires US Size 10 (6.0mm) circular needles measuring 29 inches (74 centimeters) or longer, allowing stitches to spread comfortably across the needle without crowding. Additional materials include stitch markers for pattern placement and a yarn needle for weaving in ends during finishing.

Pattern Summary

This beginner-friendly pattern creates a poncho through a straightforward two-section construction. The first section establishes the poncho body by casting on between 140 and 170 stitches depending on size, beginning with 8 rows of garter stitch for a finished edge. The central portion maintains garter stitch borders while the interior is worked in ridge stitch, creating a balanced design that extends approximately 16½ to 18½ inches. The neck opening is created by binding off the center stitches and then recasting them on the following row, a technique that maintains stitch count while establishing the neckline. The second section mirrors the first, with ridge stitch worked from the new cast-on edge for an additional 16½ to 18½ inches, followed by a final 7-row garter stitch border that completes the poncho. The pattern concludes with binding off all stitches and weaving in ends, with optional blocking to achieve precise measurements.
