Berroco Durak Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Durak is an intermediate-level knitted sweater available in both adult and child versions. This unisex design offers multiple size options ranging from 36½" to 70¼" in chest circumference, with finished lengths between 25" and 29". The sweater is shown in a size 46¾" chest measurement and features a classic pullover construction suitable for various body types with approximately 2–6 inches of positive ease recommended for comfortable fit.

Construction Techniques

The Durak sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, worked-flat approach. The back, front, and sleeves are each worked individually in flat rows using straight needles, then sewn together at the seams to create the finished garment. This traditional construction method allows for precise shaping and sizing adjustments throughout the knitting process. Shoulder shaping is incorporated into the pattern through strategic bind-offs to create proper garment fit.

Stitch Patterns and Techniques

The primary stitch used in this sweater is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture. The design incorporates striping techniques using two contrasting colors: a main color (MC) in Evergreen and a contrasting color (CC) in Golden, allowing for visual interest and design variation throughout the garment.

Yarn and Materials

The Durak is designed to be knitted with Berroco Lanas, a yarn that comes in 100-gram balls. The pattern requires 6 to 11 balls of the main color (Evergreen #95134) depending on size, plus 1 ball of the contrasting Golden color (#95109). This yarn weight and fiber content are specifically calibrated to achieve the pattern's required gauge.

Needles and Notions

  • Knitting needles in sizes 6 (4 mm) and 7 (4.5 mm), with size selection based on individual gauge
  • 16-inch circular needle in size 6 (4 mm) for ribbing and neckline work
  • 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points
  • 2 stitch holders for temporarily holding stitches during construction

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch when worked on the larger needles (size 7 / 4.5 mm). Accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, and the pattern recommends checking gauge before beginning the project. All gauge measurements are taken after blocking, making the blocking step crucial for achieving accurate finished dimensions.

Skill Level

Designed by Mel Kennelly, the Durak is rated as an Intermediate skill level project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational experience in basic stitches, shaping techniques, and garment assembly.
