Product Description
Berroco Eleri Knit Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Eleri is a knitted sweater designed by Alison Green, featured in Berroco Book #414. This intermediate-level garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from a 32¼" bust to a 64¼" bust, with finished lengths between 23" and 25½" depending on size. The sweater is shown in size 36" and features a lace pattern detail at the lower edge, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.
Construction Techniques
The Eleri employs a sophisticated mixed-method construction approach. The garment begins with bottom-up construction, starting at the lower edge. The lace pattern sections for the back and front are worked flat in rows as separate pieces before being joined together. Once the lace sections are complete, the body transitions to worked in the round using circular needles, continuing seamlessly to the underarms. At the underarms, the piece is divided and the back and front are worked flat in rows to complete the upper body. The finished garment features seamed construction where necessary to join the various sections.
Stitches and Lace Pattern
The Eleri features a distinctive Lace Pattern that appears at the lower edge of both the back and front pieces. This lace pattern is worked over a multiple of 8 stitches plus 5 additional stitches and repeats over 4 rows. The pattern combines yarn overs (yo) and centered double decreases (CDD) to create an openwork design, alternating with stockinette stitch sections. The lace rows feature purl stitches (p1) that frame the decorative yarn over and decrease sequences, while knit stitches (k3) create textured blocks between the lace motifs. A specialized Neck Detail pattern is also included, worked over 5 stitches using the same yarn over and centered double decrease technique to create a coordinated neckline treatment.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Eleri is designed to be knitted with Berroco Cambria yarn in the colorway #7937 Heather. Berroco Cambria is a worsted-weight yarn sold in 50-gram hanks, with yardage requirements ranging from 5 hanks for the smallest size to 10 hanks for the largest sizes. The pattern requires two circular needles: a 29" circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) for the main body and a 16" circular needle in size 4 (3.50 mm) for ribbing and neckline work. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers in different colors to track pattern repeats and shaping, 1 stitch holder for holding stitches during construction, and waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch and lace pattern when worked on the larger needles.
Sizing and Fit
The sweater is designed with positive ease, recommending 0 to 4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable fit. The finished bust measurements range from 32¼" to 64¼", with lower edge measurements slightly larger, ranging from 37" to 67½" due to the lace pattern shaping. This design consideration allows the lace sections to flare slightly at the hem while the upper body fits closer to the body.
