Product Description

Berroco Germantown is a charming accessory set that includes a hat and matching fingerless mitts that both feature stockinette stitch with little pops of texture throughout. Both projects are knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, with ribbed trim and the subtle allover texture pattern over the main sections. The mitts feature a thumb gusset for a great fit, and they're the perfect things to grab when the weather has turned cold. Whether you knit the Germantown set or choose one, you've got a great go-to accessory pattern to come back to whenever you need a quick gift! Berroco Fika is a smooth and soft superwash Merino wool yarn that is warm and comfortable to wear next to your skin. Choose from subtle speckled colorways or splashier space-dyed ones and enjoy the coziness of your finished Germantown accessories! Texture pattern is written out only.

Berroco Germantown Knitting Pattern: Hat and Mitts

What is Being Made

The Berroco Germantown pattern, designed by Åsa Buchta, includes two coordinating knitted accessories: a fitted hat and matching mitts. The hat is available in three sizes with finished measurements of approximately 17¼", 18½", or 19¾" around the head with heights of 8½", 9¼", or 10" respectively. The mitts measure approximately 7" around the hand and 7" in length, making them a versatile accessory set for cooler weather.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create a polished, professional finish. The hat and mitts are both worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating seamless garments. The construction is bottom-up, meaning knitters begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the crown of the hat and cuff of the mitts. The seamless, in-the-round construction method ensures consistent fabric and a comfortable fit without bulky seams.

Stitches Used

The pattern features a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches. The ribbing at the cuff uses knit and purl stitches in alternation (K1, P1 ribbing), which creates an elastic edge that hugs the head and wrists. The main body of both the hat and mitts is worked in Pattern Stitch, which is the primary stitch pattern for the garments. Decreases are incorporated using knit two together (k2tog) to shape the crown of the hat and achieve proper fit. The pattern includes specific decrease rounds to transition from the wider body to the narrower crown.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

This pattern calls for Berroco Fika yarn, a 100-gram hank in the colorway #7052 Sparkler. One hank is sufficient for both the hat and mitts in the smallest size, or knitters can use one hank per garment for larger sizes or if making only the hat or mitts separately.

For the Hat: Knitters will need 16" circular needles in sizes 2 (2.75 mm) and 4 (3.5 mm), plus one set of double-pointed needles or preferred needles for small circumferences in size 4 (3.5 mm). Additional notions include a stitch marker, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optionally a faux fur pompom for the crown.

For the Mitts: One set each of double-pointed needles or preferred small-circumference needles in sizes 2 (2.75 mm) and 4 (3.5 mm) are required. Knitters will also need stitch markers, with one in a different color to mark the beginning of the round, and waste yarn to hold stitches during construction.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 34 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) in Pattern Stitch on the larger needle. Gauge is measured after blocking, and the pattern emphasizes the importance of checking gauge before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements. The ribbed cuffs are worked on smaller needles to create the necessary elasticity, while the main body is worked on larger needles to achieve the correct gauge and drape.
