Berroco Jovita Knitted Accessories Set

Project Overview

Jovita is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Åsa Buchta that creates a coordinated set of winter accessories including a hat and mittens. This downloadable PDF pattern uses two complementary yarns from Berroco to produce textured, finished pieces suitable for cold-weather wear.

What Is Being Made

  • Hat: Approximately 18 inches (46 cm) in circumference and 8 inches (20 cm) high, designed for a comfortable fit around the head
  • Mittens: Approximately 7½ inches (19 cm) around the hand with a length of 8¾ inches (22 cm), sized to fit average adult hands

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs circular knitting methods for both garments, utilizing the magic loop or small circumference knitting approach. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, while the mittens are constructed on double-pointed needles. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to track the beginning of rounds and maintain pattern alignment throughout the project. Knitters will use waste yarn to hold stitches, a common technique for managing live stitches during construction and seaming.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The hat features a 12-stitch repeat pattern that combines knit and purl stitches to create visual texture and interest. The pattern stitch includes:

  • Alternating knit (K) and purl (P) stitches arranged in multiple rounds
  • Stitch sequences such as K3, P2, K1, P2, K3, P1 and variations that shift and interlock across rounds
  • Ribbed and textured sections created through strategic placement of knit and purl stitches
  • Pattern repeats that build dimensional texture when worked in the round

The mittens follow a similar knit-and-purl construction method, though the specific stitch pattern details are referenced within the full PDF instructions.

Yarn and Materials

For the Hat: One ball of Berroco Ultra Wool DK in color #83109 Fog (100 grams). This yarn serves as the primary color base (referred to as C1 in the pattern).

For the Mittens: One ball of Berroco Aerial Color in color #34104 Cassatt (25 grams), used as a contrasting color (C2). The pattern notes that the set can be made using a different ball of each yarn if preferred, allowing for creative color combinations.

Needles and Notions: The hat requires two 16-inch (40 cm) circular needles in sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm). The mittens require one set each of double-pointed needles in sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm). Additional supplies include a stitch marker (preferably in a contrasting color to identify the beginning of rounds), a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 30 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) when measured in pattern on the larger needles with C1 and C2 held together. The gauge is measured after blocking, which is an important step for achieving accurate finished measurements. Knitters are advised to check gauge before beginning the project to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and have experience with circular knitting techniques. The combination of stitch patterns and the requirement to work with two yarns simultaneously adds complexity beyond beginner projects.
