Product Description
Berroco Maccabeau Knit Sweater
What is Being Made
The Maccabeau is an oversized knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment features a generous fit with approximately 16–18" of ease and is available in five sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 40" to 72". The sweater offers a relaxed, contemporary silhouette suitable for layering and casual wear.
Construction Method
This sweater employs a seamless, top-down construction technique that minimizes finishing work. The yoke is worked flat following a charted pattern, after which the ribbing is sewn together. Stitches are then picked up around the yoke and the body is worked downward in one continuous piece, eliminating the need for seaming the body and sleeves.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Maccabeau incorporates several key knitting techniques:
- Lace patterning featured in the yoke, worked from a detailed stitch chart with an 18-stitch repeat measuring 3" over the charted pattern
- Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rounds over 4" using the larger needles
- Ribbing for the set-up section, alternating knit and purl stitches to create structure and elasticity
- Increases strategically placed to shape the garment as stitches are picked up for the body
- Cable needle techniques implied by the inclusion of a cable needle in the notions list
Materials Required
This pattern calls for Berroco Summer Silk yarn, a lightweight fiber ideal for warm-weather garments. The yardage requirements vary by size: 5 balls (250 grams) for the smallest size through 10 balls (500 grams) for the largest size, all in colorway #4001 Surf.
The project requires two 36" circular needles in sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm), plus one 16" circular needle in size 5 (3.75 mm) for working ribbing and smaller circumferences. Additional notions include a cable needle, four removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches.
Skill Level
The Maccabeau is rated as an Intermediate project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle charted lace patterns and seamless construction techniques.
