Berroco Neala Knitting Pattern: Mittens and Scarf

Project Overview

The Berroco Neala pattern is an easy-level knitting design that includes two coordinating accessories: a textured scarf and a pair of mittens. Both projects use Berroco Lanas Quick yarn and showcase fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners and intermediate knitters.

Scarf Design and Specifications

The scarf measures approximately 6 inches wide at its widest point and 37 inches in length, making it a versatile accessory for layering and everyday wear. This scarf is worked flat on straight needles, beginning with a ribbed cuff section before transitioning into the main body.

Scarf Construction Techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The scarf is cast on and worked from the bottom edge upward
  • Worked flat: Created on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for easy stitch manipulation
  • Ribbed cuff: Begins with a knit-purl rib pattern (K2, P2 repeat) that provides elasticity and definition
  • Garter stitch body: The main section uses garter stitch, created by knitting every row for a reversible, textured fabric
  • Divided loop construction: Features a unique design element where stitches are divided and worked separately to create an integrated loop detail

Scarf Stitches Used: Knit stitch, purl stitch, knit two together decrease, slip stitch, and garter stitch.

Mittens Design and Specifications

The mittens are sized to fit approximately 8 inches around the hand with a length of 12 inches when the cuff is unrolled. These mittens are constructed using seamless, in-the-round techniques that eliminate the need for seaming and create a comfortable, fitted garment.

Mittens Construction Techniques:

  • Worked in the round: Created using double-pointed needles to form a seamless tube
  • Seamless construction: Stitches are worked continuously in circular rows, eliminating side seams
  • Two-needle sizing: Pattern uses size 10½ / 6.5 mm needles for the ribbed cuff and size 11 / 8 mm needles for the main hand section, allowing for a fitted cuff and comfortable hand area
  • Stitch markers: Essential for tracking the beginning of each round and maintaining pattern consistency

Mittens Stitches Used: Knit stitch, purl stitch, and ribbing for cuff definition.

Yarn and Materials

Both projects use Berroco Lanas Quick, a worsted-weight yarn offered in 100-gram hanks. The scarf requires 2 hanks in color #77201 Cordovan, while the mittens use 1 hank in color #77205 Olive. For longer mittens, an additional hank of yarn is recommended.

Needles and Notions Required:

  • For Scarf: Size 11 / 8 mm straight knitting needles and 2 stitch holders
  • For Mittens: One set each of double-pointed needles in sizes 10½ / 6.5 mm and 11 / 8 mm, stitch markers (including one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of rounds), waste yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 18 rows equaling 4 inches in garter stitch on the larger needles after blocking. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished projects match the intended measurements. Both projects benefit from blocking to even out stitches and set the final dimensions.

Skill Level and Pattern Details

Rated as an Easy skill level, the Neala pattern is designed by Åsa Buchta and is accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch patterns and clear construction methods make this an ideal project for developing fundamental knitting skills while creating wearable, practical accessories.
