Materials

• Notions: Three stitch markers (with one in a different color to denote the beginning of the round), waste yarn for holding stitches during the thumb division, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Pattern Details

Designed by Amy Christoffers and published in Booklet #390, the Sia pattern begins with casting on 36 stitches divided evenly over three needles. The construction starts with a 6-inch 2x2 ribbed cuff, which provides elasticity and a professional finish. Following the ribbing, knitters work even in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7 inches from the beginning, or to the desired length. The thumb gusset is then shaped through a series of paired increases worked every three rounds, gradually expanding from 3 stitches to 11 stitches at the gusset. Once the gusset reaches its full width, the thumb stitches are divided and held on waste yarn for later completion. The mitt is then worked even until it measures 1 inch above the thumb stitches, after which the cuff ribbing is resumed for a final 1 inch before binding off. This construction method ensures a comfortable, custom fit and allows for easy adjustments based on individual measurements.
