Berroco Xue Legwarmers

What is Being Made

The Berroco Xue is a pair of seamless legwarmers designed as an accessory project from Booklet #392 by the Berroco Design Team. This downloadable knitting pattern creates two matching legwarmers that measure approximately 12 to 16 inches around at the top, 9 to 13 inches around at the bottom, and 20 inches in length after blocking. The legwarmers are available in three sizes to accommodate different leg dimensions.

Techniques Used

These legwarmers are worked seamlessly in the round using the circular knitting method, eliminating the need for seaming. The pattern begins with a set-up ribbing section worked in the round to create a snug, elastic cuff at the top. The main body is then worked in stockinette stitch with strategic increases that shape the legwarmer from a narrower top opening to a wider bottom opening. The increases are worked using M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) techniques to maintain even shaping. The legwarmer concludes with a ribbed cuff at the bottom that mirrors the top ribbing, providing stretch and recovery at both ends.

Stitches Used

• Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used for the main body, created by knitting every round when working in the round, producing a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the right side
• Ribbing (K1, P1): Used for both the top and bottom cuffs, alternating knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns that provide elasticity and a fitted finish
• M1L and M1R (Make One Left and Make One Right): Increase stitches used to gradually widen the legwarmer from top to bottom, creating a tapered silhouette

Materials

The Xue legwarmers are knitted using Berroco Millefiori Big yarn in the colorway #5896 Dahlia. The project requires 3 balls of yarn, with each ball weighing 100 grams. Knitting is accomplished with one set of four double-pointed needles (dpns) in size 11 (8.00 mm), or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A stitch marker is also required to denote the beginning of each round. The recommended gauge is 12 stitches and 16 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, and checking gauge before beginning is emphasized to ensure proper fit.
