What is Being Made

The Cascade Yarns DK Summertime Lace Tank is a knitted sleeveless vest designed for women, available in sizes Small through 2X-Large with finished bust measurements ranging from 34 to 50 inches. This intermediate-level garment features an elegant lace pattern worked throughout the front and back panels, creating a sophisticated summery silhouette perfect for warm-weather layering or standalone wear.

Techniques Used

This tank top is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its construction and aesthetic:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing for straightforward sizing adjustments and a logical progression through the pattern.
  • Seamless, Worked-in-the-Round: The body is primarily worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric. This technique reduces finishing work and creates clean, professional results.
  • Lace Patterning: The design features an intricate lace pattern that appears on both the front and back of the shell. The lace pattern repeats across rounds and rows, with yarn overs and decreases creating decorative openwork that adds visual interest and breathability to the piece.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs a variety of fundamental and decorative knitting stitches:

  • Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation stitches that form the base of the fabric structure.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used in sections where a smooth, flat fabric is desired.
  • Yarn Overs (YO): These create the decorative holes and openwork characteristic of lace knitting, allowing yarn to pass over the needle to increase stitches while maintaining stitch count through paired decreases.
  • Decreases: The pattern uses SSK (slip, slip, knit) and K2tog (knit two together) for right-leaning and left-leaning decreases respectively, which pair with yarn overs to form the lace motif. P2tog (purl two together) decreases are used on wrong-side rows.
  • Lace Pattern Repeat: A four-row repeat forms the core of the design, alternating between pattern rows with yarn overs and decreases, and plain knit or purl rows that allow the lace to develop visually.

Materials and Tools

The Cascade Yarns DK Summertime Lace Tank is designed to be worked with specific materials that contribute to its drape and summer-appropriate qualities:

  • Yarn: Cascade Yarns Sarasota, a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, provides breathability and structure. The yarn is worked at a DK weight with yardage of 314 yards (287.5 meters) per 100-gram skein. The pattern calls for 3 skeins for sizes Small, Medium, and Large, and 4 skeins for sizes XL and 2XL, in color #219 (Crushed Grape).
  • Needles: Two US 5 (3.75 mm) circular knitting needles measuring 24 inches are used for working the main body in the round, along with a shorter US 5 (3.75 mm) 16-inch circular needle for working smaller circumferences such as necklines or armholes.
  • Notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, stitch holders for securing stitches during construction, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20.5 stitches and 23.25 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the lace pattern and blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the lace pattern displays as intended.

Design Details

The lace pattern is thoughtfully designed with edge stitches that create definition: the pattern begins and ends with a single knit stitch on each round or row, and these edge stitches form 2-stitch "side seams" on both the right and left sides of the tank. These side seams serve a functional purpose by separating the front and back panels while maintaining the visual continuity of the lace pattern across the entire garment.
