Classic Elite Yarns Marisol Knit Shawl and Wrap

What Is Being Made

Marisol is a lacy knit wrap designed by Tonia Barry, originally published in Sunny Day 1402. This is a rectangular shawl and wrap featuring decorative large tassels attached to each of the four corners for a whimsical finishing touch. The finished wrap measures approximately 71 inches long and 20 inches wide after blocking, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques to create visual interest and texture:

  • Seamless construction: The wrap is worked flat from a single cast-on edge, eliminating the need for seaming
  • Cable work: A gable chart spanning 10 stitches over 22 rows creates structured cable elements throughout the design
  • Lace patterning: Delicate openwork sections are incorporated using a repeating lace pattern based on a 4-stitch multiple, creating an airy, elegant aesthetic
  • Tassel finishing: Hand-crafted tassels are constructed using wrapped yarn and braiding techniques, then securely attached to each corner

Stitches and Pattern Details

The wrap combines stockinette stitch borders with two primary pattern elements. The lace pattern uses yarn overs (yo) paired with decreases—specifically ssk (slip, slip, knit) on right-side rows and p2tog (purl two together) on wrong-side rows—to create the openwork effect. The gable chart incorporates knit and purl stitches along with right twist (RT) and left twist (LT) cable crosses to form dimensional cable columns.

Construction begins with casting on 122 stitches and working 2 rows in stockinette stitch. The established pattern section divides the stitches into repeating blocks: 32 stitches in stockinette stitch, followed by six repeats of 8 stitches in lace pattern alternating with 10 stitches from the gable chart, finishing with 8 stitches in lace pattern and 3 stitches in stockinette stitch. The wrap is worked even until it reaches approximately 70 inches from the cast-on edge, ending at row 22 of the gable chart, then completed with 2 final rows of stockinette stitch before binding off all stitches.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Marisol is designed to be worked in Cerro by Classic Elite Yarns, a premium blend of 85% pima cotton and 15% alpaca. This fiber composition provides breathability and softness while maintaining structure. The yarn is worked at a gauge that produces 150 yards per 50-gram skein, with the project requiring 9 hanks in colorway 7154 Orchid.

The tassel finishing requires additional yarn preparation: three 24-inch strands are cut for each of the four tassels, along with yarn wrapped thirty times around a 12-inch ruler to create the tassel body. A 12-inch strand is used to wrap and cinch each completed tassel approximately 1.25 inches below the top loop.

Finishing and Blocking

After all stitches are bound off, ends are woven in and the wrap is blocked to finished measurements to even out the lace and cable patterns. The tassel construction involves folding wrapped yarn strands in half, securing them with a double knot, braiding the divided tail sections for approximately 3 inches, and trimming the tassel ends evenly. Each completed tassel is then sewn securely to one of the four corners of the wrap.
