Classic Elite Yarns Ingrid Cabled Headband

What Is Being Made

The Ingrid is a cabled knit headband accessory designed by Amy Loberg. This piece is constructed as a seamless tube worked in the round that features shaping through strategic increases and decreases. The headband widens toward the middle section and then narrows again toward the end, with the two narrow ends joined at the center back for a finished, wearable accessory.

Construction Method and Techniques

This headband is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a continuous tube without seams. The construction begins with a cast-on of 36 stitches distributed across three needles: 18 stitches on Needle 1, 9 stitches on Needle 2, and 9 stitches on Needle 3. A marker is placed and the stitches are joined carefully to avoid twisting.

The design employs cable stitch patterning on Needle 1, which is worked from a provided chart across the entire piece. The remaining stitches on Needles 2 and 3 are worked in stockinette stitch to provide a smooth background for the featured cables.

Strategic increases and decreases are incorporated throughout the pattern to create the distinctive shaping. Increases are worked on Rounds 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, and 64 using make-one stitches (m1-l and m1-r), expanding the tube from 36 stitches to 64 stitches at its widest point. Corresponding decreases are worked on Rounds 105, 113, 121, 129, 137, 145, and 153 using knit-two-together (k2tog) and slip-slip-knit (ssk) decreases, bringing the stitch count back down to 36 stitches.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The primary stitches used in this pattern include:

  • Cable stitches – worked from a charted pattern on the front needle
  • Stockinette stitch – smooth knit fabric on the background sections
  • Make-one increases (m1-l and m1-r) – for left-leaning and right-leaning increases
  • Knit-two-together (k2tog) – right-leaning decrease
  • Slip-slip-knit (ssk) – left-leaning decrease

The pattern is worked over 164 to 184 total chart rounds depending on the size chosen, resulting in a finished piece measuring approximately 19¼ to 21 inches from beginning to end. The piece is finished by binding off all stitches and flattening the tube so the cable pattern is centered on the outer layer.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern uses Classic Elite Yarns yarn and is worked with circular needles appropriate for the yarn weight specified in the complete pattern. The headband is designed to be worked in the round, making circular needles essential for construction.

Skill Level

This headband is rated as an Intermediate skill level project, suitable for knitters with experience in working in the round, reading charts, and executing cable stitches and various increase and decrease techniques.
