Classic Elite Yarns Gavina Wrap

What is Being Made

The Gavina is a versatile rectangular wrap designed by Susan Mills, originally published in Gigi 1802A. This wrap features extra-long ties and is worked as a single seamless piece. The finished wrap measures approximately 32½ inches wide and 18 inches high with edges unrolled, while the ties extend 22¾ inches in length, making this an adaptable accessory suitable for various styling options.

Construction Techniques

The Gavina wrap is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach. The garment begins with a cast-on of 187 stitches and is worked in one continuous piece without seaming. The construction method incorporates strategic increases using the cable cast-on method to expand the stitch count as the ties are formed, creating a unified design from cast-on to bind-off.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an easy skill level. The design opens with a ribbed border worked in a knit-purl pattern (k2, p3 repeat) to create definition at the edge. The main body is worked in Stockinette stitch, which produces a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance. The ribbed section is worked for 5 rows before transitioning to Stockinette stitch for the primary wrap body. As the tie sections are formed, additional stitches are cast on using the cable cast-on method, and the final bind-off is completed knitwise to secure all stitches.

Materials and Specifications

The Gavina is designed to be knitted with Gigi yarn by Classic Elite Yarns, a blend of 85% cotton, 10% silk, and 5% stretch polyester. Each 50-gram ball yields approximately 142 yards, and the pattern requires 6 balls in the colorway 7395 Purple Mountain.

Needles required include circular knitting needles measuring 32 inches or longer in both US size 5 (3.75 mm) and US size 6 (4 mm), or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. The larger needle is used for the main body and tie sections, while the smaller needle is used for the final width adjustments of the ties.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 35 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch using the larger needle, blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. Finishing involves weaving in all ends and blocking the wrap to measurements while allowing the edges to roll naturally, which is characteristic of Stockinette stitch fabric.
