What is Being Made

The Janda is a simple rectangular knit wrap designed by Susan Mills, originally published in Juna 1801, a printed collection of designs. This seamless wrap measures approximately 13½ inches wide and 72½ inches long when blocked, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping. The wrap is worked in a single piece from bottom to top using a flat knitting construction.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques:

• Bottom-up construction: The wrap is worked from the cast-on edge upward to the finished length
• Seamless, flat knitting: The entire piece is worked flat on straight needles without seaming
• Drop stitch technique: Strategic dropped stitches create decorative vertical lines and openwork details throughout the design
• Ribbed edging: The top and bottom edges are finished with 2x2 ribbing for structure and definition
• Blocking: The completed wrap is gently blocked to measurements to enhance the stitch definition and drape

Stitches Used

The Janda features two primary stitch patterns that work together to create visual interest:

• 2x2 Rib: A foundational stitch pattern with a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2, alternating knit and purl columns. This stitch is used for the 4-row borders at both the beginning and end of the wrap, providing elastic edges and structural stability
• Drop Stitch Rib: The main pattern stitch with a multiple of 8 stitches plus 6, worked over a 20-row repeat. This sophisticated stitch combines ribbed sections with yarn overs and intentional dropped stitches that are unraveled after completion. The drop stitch rib creates elegant vertical lines and subtle openwork texture while maintaining the wrap's structural integrity. Note that stitch count increases during certain rows but stabilizes after rows 8–10 or 18–20

Materials

The Janda is designed to be knitted with Juna yarn by Classic Elite Yarns, a premium blend of 80% merino wool and 20% superfine alpaca. This fiber composition provides warmth, softness, and excellent drape characteristics ideal for a wrap. Two hanks of yarn are required, with each hank weighing 100 grams and providing approximately 439 yards of yardage, totaling approximately 878 yards for the complete project.

The pattern calls for US size 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches when measured in the Drop Stitch Rib pattern and blocked. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not crucial to the success of this project; however, significant gauge variations may require additional yarn.

The finished wrap is worked with 78 cast-on stitches, creating the 13½-inch width. The wrap extends to approximately 72½ inches in length, providing generous coverage for wrapping and styling.
