Product Description
Crystal Cowl by Spud & Chloë
What Is Being Made
The Crystal Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted cowl designed by Nancy Ekvall as part of the Spud & Chloë On the Run series. This project creates a finished cowl measuring 24 inches in length and 11 inches in width, offering a cushy, textured neckwear piece that combines simplicity with visual interest through a single twist construction.
Knitting Techniques
This cowl is worked using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach, making it ideal for knitters learning fundamental techniques. The construction method involves knitting a flat rectangular piece, then adding a single twist before seaming the cast-on edge to the bind-off edge. This twist creates the cowl's finished shape and adds dimensional appeal to what is otherwise a straightforward knit project.
Stitches Used
The Crystal Cowl employs garter stitch throughout, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch is one of the most fundamental knitting stitches and produces a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch choice makes the pattern perfect for beginners while creating the characteristic bulky, cushy texture that defines this cowl.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: Spud & Chloë Outer (65% Superwash Wool, 35% Certified Organic Cotton; 100g/60yds) — 2 hanks in the Rhino colorway
- Needles: Size 17 (12mm) needles
- Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends
- Gauge: 8¾ stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch
Pattern Details
The Crystal Cowl begins with casting on 24 stitches and working in garter stitch until the piece measures 24 inches from the cast-on edge. The yarn is then cut, leaving a 30-inch tail for seaming. After binding off loosely, the cowl is laid flat, twisted once, and the cast-on edge is sewn to the bind-off edge to create the finished cowl shape. Ends are woven in, and the piece can be blocked as desired.
