Debbie Bliss Classic Baby Cardi

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Classic Baby Cardi is a beginner-friendly knitted cardigan designed for infants aged 3 to 24 months. This pattern includes five size options to fit ages 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-18, and 18-24 months, with finished chest measurements ranging from 51cm to 70cm (20 to 27½ inches). The cardigan features a classic construction with front button closure, set-in sleeves, and functional patch pockets, making it a practical and timeless piece for a baby's wardrobe.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with ribbed edging worked in a 2x2 rib pattern to create stretchy, fitted borders. Increases are worked evenly across transition rows to shape the garment body. The cardigan uses the technique of placing stitches on holders during construction, particularly for pocket placement and shoulder shaping. Shoulders are shaped by casting off stitches at the beginning of rows to create a fitted neckline. Pocket linings are worked separately and then integrated into the front panels using a slip-stitch technique, allowing for functional and decorative pockets.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side
  • Ribbing (K2, P2): A 2x2 knit-purl rib pattern used for the cuffs and edgings to provide elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) stitches: The foundational stitches that form the basis of all pattern work

Materials

The Classic Baby Cardi is worked in Debbie Bliss Eco Baby yarn in the colorway Duck Egg 08. The yardage requirement varies by size, ranging from 3 to 6 balls of 50g weight each, depending on which of the five sizes is being knitted. Two pairs of knitting needles are required: 3mm (US 2-3) needles for the ribbed edgings and initial cast-on, and 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the main body fabric. A 3mm (US 2-3) circular needle is also needed, likely for working the neckline. The pattern specifies a tension of 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm over stockinette stitch using the 3.25mm needles. Four to six buttons are required depending on the size selected, serving as the closure for the front opening.

Pattern Details

The cardigan is constructed in separate pieces: left front, right front, back, sleeves, and pocket linings. The left front begins with 31 to 43 stitches (depending on size) cast on with the smaller needles and worked in 2x2 ribbing for several rows before transitioning to the larger needles and stockinette stitch. Pocket linings are created separately by casting on 14 to 22 stitches and working 18 to 24 rows in stockinette stitch, then integrating them into the front panels. The back piece includes shoulder shaping accomplished by casting off 12 to 16 stitches at the beginning of two rows, leaving 26 to 34 stitches on a spare needle for the neckline. Sleeve length ranges from 14cm to 22cm depending on the infant's age category.
