Debbie Bliss Dotty Cowl and Bobble Hat

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from Debbie Bliss includes two coordinating accessories: a cowl and a bobble hat. The cowl is a tubular neck warmer with a finished circumference of 84cm (33 inches) and depth of 25cm (9¾ inches). The bobble hat is designed to fit small-medium or medium-large head sizes, with circumferences of 49cm (19¼ inches) and 53cm (21 inches) respectively. Both pieces are worked using the same yarn in complementary colorways, making them ideal companion pieces for a complete accessory set.

Techniques Used

Both the cowl and bobble hat are worked in the round, a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric without requiring seaming. This method is achieved using circular needles for the cowl and double-pointed needles for the hat. Working in the round eliminates the need for finishing seams and creates a professional appearance. The pattern incorporates 2 colour fleck stitch, a textured stitch pattern that blends two yarn colors together to create visual interest and depth. Additionally, the cowl features a folded brim detail that is created by working stockinette stitch (knit rounds) after the ribbed cuff, then folding this section to the right side during finishing.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the primary fabric of both projects
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the 1×1 ribbed cuff sections on both the cowl and hat
  • Knit two together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the hat and reduce stitches at the top of the cowl
  • 2 colour fleck stitch: A textured stitch pattern created by knitting with two colors across rounds, producing a flecked appearance
  • Ribbing (1×1 rib): An elastic stitch pattern formed by alternating knit and purl stitches, used for the cuffs and edges to provide stretch and recovery

Materials and Tools

This pattern requires Debbie Bliss Super Chunky Merino yarn in two colors: Ecru 01 (A) and Lilac 12 (B). Yarn quantities are approximate and based on average requirements: 3 balls of Ecru and 2 balls of Lilac are needed for the cowl, while 3 balls of Ecru and 3 balls of Lilac are required for the hat. Each ball weighs 100g (3½ oz).

For the cowl, you will need one 60cm (24 inch) long circular needle in 8mm (US 11) size and one in 9mm (US 13) size. For the hat, you will need a set of double-pointed needles in 8mm (US 11) size and a separate set in 9mm (US 13) size. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 11 stitches and 20 rows over a 10cm (4 inch) square using the 9mm (US 13) needles in 2 colour fleck stitch.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner friendly, making it suitable for knitters who are new to the craft or those seeking an accessible project. The straightforward construction, basic stitch repertoire, and the technique of working in the round with clear shaping instructions make this an ideal introduction to creating wearable accessories.
