Deramores Knitted Poppy Brooch

What is Being Made

The Deramores Knitted Poppy Brooch is a small decorative accessory designed to be worn on clothing or bags. This beginner-friendly knitting project creates a realistic poppy flower brooch measuring approximately 8.5cm across, excluding the leaf component. The finished piece is secured with a 38mm brooch back, making it a functional and wearable accessory.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners learning essential knitting skills. The project utilizes increases to shape the petals, creating dimension and structure in the flower design. Knitters will practice both kfb (knit into front and back) and pfb (purl into front and back) increase methods throughout the pattern. The pattern also incorporates stocking stitch, the most basic and commonly used knit fabric structure, which creates a smooth, professional finish ideal for a decorative brooch.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – The fundamental knit stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (P) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used for texture variation
  • Kfb (Knit into Front and Back) – An increase technique that creates one additional stitch from a single stitch
  • Pfb (Purl into Front and Back) – The purl equivalent increase method
  • Skpo (Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over) – A left-leaning decrease technique
  • Stocking Stitch – The primary fabric structure created by alternating knit and purl rows

Materials and Specifications

This project requires Deramores Studio DK Yarn in three colors to create the realistic poppy design. The yarn quantities and colors are as follows:

  • Yarn A (Ruby) – 1 x 100g ball for the poppy petals
  • Yarn B (Ebony) – 1 x 100g ball for contrast details
  • Yarn C (Fir) – 1 x 100g ball for the leaf component

The pattern is worked on 3.75mm needles. The DK yarn knits to a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows measuring 10cm over stocking stitch on these needles. While tension is noted as not critical for this particular project, variations in individual tension will affect the final size and yarn quantities used. The brooch is finished with a 38mm brooch back attachment hardware.

Pattern Structure

The Knitted Poppy Brooch is constructed by making individual components that are assembled together. The pattern begins with four petals, each created separately using the increase techniques described above. The petals are cast on with a small number of stitches and gradually increased to create the characteristic curved petal shape, then decreased to finish. A leaf component completes the design, adding botanical authenticity to the finished brooch.

Designed by Sarah Murray, a freelance knitting and crochet designer based in Cornwall, this pattern reflects the designer's signature style of creating quirky, detailed accessories inspired by natural forms and the Cornish landscape.
