What is Being Made

The Dusty Cowl is a circular knitted cowl designed by Lisa Richardson. This intermediate-level project creates a finished cowl measuring 87.5 cm (34½ inches) all around and 24 cm (9½ inches) deep. The cowl is worked seamlessly in the round using a continuous circular construction, making it an ideal accessory for layering and warmth.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:

• Cable stitches are incorporated throughout the design, specifically C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) techniques, which involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle and crossing them over other stitches to create twisted rope-like textures
• Lace elements using yarn forward increases (yfwd) and slip-stitch decreases (sl 1, K1, psso) create an openwork pattern that adds elegance to the cowl
• Picot cast-off finishing technique provides a decorative, scalloped edge to the top of the cowl

Stitches Used

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Dusty Cowl is knitted using Rowan Alpaca Classic, a luxurious yarn choice. The pattern is photographed in the colorway Willow 112. Alpaca Classic is supplied in 25-gram balls, making it an economical choice for this accessory project.

Needles: The pattern requires a 3¾mm (US 5) circular needle measuring no more than 80 cm in length for working the cowl in the round. Additionally, a cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitch techniques throughout the pattern.

Tension: The pattern is worked to a tension of 27.5 stitches and 32 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when measured over the pattern using 3¾mm needles. Achieving correct tension is critical to ensure the finished cowl meets the specified dimensions and drapes properly.
