What is Being Made

Techniques Used

The scarf is constructed using bottom-up construction, worked seamless and flat on circular needles. The defining technique is the drop stitch method, which creates the dramatic fringe effect. This technique involves strategically dropping stitches and allowing them to unravel down to the cast-on edge, creating long strands that are then braided and knotted to form decorative fringe. The piece is worked in the round using a circular needle, beginning with a cast-on of 160 stitches and worked for 72 rounds before the drop stitch bind-off sequence is applied.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout this pattern is Stockinette stitch (knit every round when working in the round). The pattern also incorporates a stripe sequence that alternates between two yarn colors: 12 rounds of color A (aquarium) followed by 12 rounds of color B (sunset), repeated throughout the piece. The bind-off uses a specialized drop stitch bind-off technique where stitches are bound off in groups of 5, with alternating groups being dropped and unraveled to create the fringe.

Materials

This pattern calls for Filatura Di Crosa TEMPO yarn, a blend of 51% cotton, 37% acrylic, and 12% nylon. Two balls each of two colors are required: color #34 aquarium and color #03 sunset. Each ball weighs 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and contains 115 yards (105 meters) of yarn. The pattern is worked on one size 7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 29 inches (74cm) long, or a size adjusted to obtain the correct gauge. Additional supplies include a stitch marker and a yarn needle for finishing. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch.
