Hadid Cushion & Wall Hanging in Rowan Handknit Cotton

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern by Chloe Thurlow offers two versatile projects in one design: a cushion cover sized to fit a 46 cm (18 inch) square cushion pad, and a coordinating wall hanging measuring 18 cm (7 inches) wide by approximately 25.5 cm (10 inches) long. The cushion is available in two finishing options—one without a zip closure and one with a 40 cm (16 inch) zip for easy insertion and removal of the cushion pad. Both projects feature the same distinctive intarsia colorwork design, allowing crafters to create a coordinated home décor set or choose individual pieces based on their preference.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs intarsia knitting, a colorwork technique that allows multiple colors to be incorporated into the fabric without carrying yarn across the back. The intarsia method creates clean, professional-looking color changes on both the front and back of the finished piece, making it ideal for decorative home accessories. The pattern includes detailed instructions for joining in and breaking off colors as required throughout the design, ensuring neat transitions between the color blocks shown on the provided chart.

The finishing process involves mattress stitch or back stitch seaming to join the front and back pieces together. For the cushion without a zip, the cast-on edge is closed after the cushion pad is inserted. For the zipped version, the cast-on edge is partially joined at 2.5 cm (approximately 1 inch) on each side before the zip is inserted, creating a functional closure while maintaining the design's visual continuity.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout both projects, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side and horizontal bumps on the wrong side
  • Garter stitch edge stitches – Single knit stitches worked at each end of every row to create a neat, finished edge that frames the intarsia chart
  • Intarsia chart stitches – The central 34 stitches of each row follow a provided chart pattern, incorporating the colorwork design

Materials: Yarn, Needles & Notions

Yarn: This pattern uses Rowan Handknit Cotton, a natural fiber yarn supplied in 50-gram balls. Two colorway options are provided. Colourway 1 features Bleached (shade 263), North Sea (shade 371), and Sea Foam (shade 352). Colourway 2 uses Straw (shade 381), Bark (shade 380), and Warm (shade 379). For the cushion project, 4 balls of the primary color (yarn A) are required, along with 1 ball each of the secondary colors (yarns B and C). For the wall hanging, only 1 ball of the primary color is needed, with 1 ball each of the accent colors.

Needles: One pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles is required for both projects. The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using these needles.

Notions: For the cushion project, a 46 cm (18 inch) square cushion pad is essential. The optional zip closure requires a 40 cm (16 inch) zip. Both projects require yarn for seaming, typically using the same yarn or a matching neutral shade.

Pattern Overview

The cushion front and back are worked identically using the same intarsia chart. Each piece begins with 84 cast-on stitches and is worked in stockinette stitch with the intarsia design centered between edge stitches. The wall hanging uses a narrower foundation of 36 cast-on stitches with the same 34-stitch chart centered between single knit edge stitches. Both projects require pressing before assembly and offer flexibility in finishing methods, making them suitable for intermediate knitters seeking to develop colorwork skills while creating functional, decorative home accessories.
