Heidi Waistcoat in Rowan Merino Aria & Kidsilk Haze

What is Being Made

The Heidi Waistcoat is a knitted sleeveless garment designed as an intermediate-level project from Quails Studio. This waistcoat is available in nine sizes, accommodating chest measurements ranging from 71–76 cm up to 152–157 cm, with corresponding finished chest measurements from 96 cm to 179 cm. The design offers versatility for a wide range of body types and fit preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Heidi Waistcoat employs several classic knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure:

  • Cable Twists: The pattern incorporates cable twists, specifically right-leaning twists (Cr3R) and left-leaning twists (Cr3L), which create decorative twisted columns throughout the garment. These cables are worked at regular intervals across the fabric.
  • Ribbed Edging: Ribbed stitches are used at the edges and borders, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: The main fabric is worked in reverse stockinette stitch (purl side facing outward), creating a textured, subtle surface that showcases the yarn qualities.
  • Stranded Colorwork: The pattern is worked with two yarn strands held together simultaneously, creating a blended color effect and adding depth to the finished piece.

Stitches Used

The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured sequence:

  • Knit Stitches (m end): Standard knit stitches form the base structure and create definition within the pattern.
  • Purl Stitches (m env): Purl stitches are used extensively to create the reverse stockinette ground fabric and to define cable and textured sections.
  • Cable Crosses (Cr3R, Cr3L): Three-stitch cable crosses worked both right and left create the twisted decorative elements. These are worked at regular intervals—typically every 2 to 4 rows—across multiple pattern repeats.
  • Ribbed Stitches (côtes): Alternating knit and purl stitches in vertical columns create the elastic ribbed sections used for edges and borders.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Heidi Waistcoat is designed to be worked with two coordinating Rowan yarn colors held together throughout:

  • Yarn A: Rowan Merino Aria in Biscuit 48 and Plush 44, with 50 grams per ball. This yarn provides the primary color and a soft merino base.
  • Yarn B: Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Lustre 686 and Liqueur 595, with 25 grams per ball. This delicate yarn adds a shimmering, luxurious quality when combined with Yarn A.
  • Needles: One pair of size 6½ (4 mm) needles is required for the main fabric, along with one cable needle for working the cable twists.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 20 rows over 10 centimeters when working reverse stockinette stitch with size 6½ needles, using one strand of Yarn A and one strand of Yarn B held together. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements across all nine size options.

Pattern Structure

The waistcoat is constructed using a repeating row-by-row pattern that alternates between ribbed edge sections, reverse stockinette panels, and cable twist motifs. The pattern rows are numbered sequentially, with stitch counts provided for each of the nine sizes in brackets, allowing knitters to track their progress and ensure proper shaping throughout the garment.
